FSC® stands for FOREST STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL®.
The FSC® mark is the consumer's guarantee for responsible forestry. It is therefore necessary to be able to follow the wood from the forest to the finished product - regardless of how many stages there are between the forest and the place where the finished product is sold.
This requires certification. Everyone with a certification is checked at least once a year during an inspection visit, and in addition, unannounced inspection visits are also made as needed. FSC® is an international non-profit labeling scheme for wood and paper. FSC® neither produces nor sells goods. You will find the FSC® mark on wood and paper products that you can buy with a clear conscience.
In an FSC® forest no more wood is felled than the forest can reproduce. At the same time, FSC® is a guarantee that animals and plant life are protected and that the people who work in the forest are trained and receive proper safety equipment as well as salary. You will find FSC® forests all over the world, from the forests of the Nordics to the rainforests of South America and the bush forests of East Africa.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
Up to 20% of the world's man-made CO2 emissions come from deforestation and forest burning. This corresponds to the amount of CO2 that it would cost to transport 8 million people by airplane from London to New York every single day. This happens because, according to the FAO, forests corresponding to an area 3 times the size of Denmark disappears every year.
The areas where the forest used to be, are most often converted to other types of fields or plantations. Therefore it makes very good sense to take care of the forests and ensure that future generations can benefit from them. However, this does not mean that we should stop using forests or wood at all. Wood is a CO2-friendly material as long as the origin is responsible.
So it makes good sense to use wood and paper as we normally do, we just need to do it carefully - with the FSC label. In an FSC® certified forest, the trees are felled gently and widely, so that the woodland is kept as constant as possible. At the same time, rare plants are preserved, springs and streams are protected.
The forest's drinking water and streams are naturally preserved and protected against pollution. In some forests, however, it may be permitted to make a clearfelling of a continuous area at a time - for example in coniferous forests, as these are sensitive to thinning.
In these forests, one still has to work with corridors to ensure that animals and plants can be spread between areas, and one must of course still live up to the rest of the strict FSC® rules - such as protection of areas in the forest, protection of endangered species of animals and plants, etc.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
FSC® protects indigenous and local populations in forests around the world - from the Sami in northern Sweden to Indians in South America. In an FSC® certified forest the natives are guaranteed the right to use the forests, as they have always done. In addition, they are allowed to preserve sacred sites and can preserve their habitats and hunting grounds.
Locals also get the opportunity to work in the forest, which means that the local population can get an income from the forest they live in, and at the same time the opportunity for an education in forestry. In addition, a percentage of the total revenue from the forest should be used to support the local community.
This could mean financial support for schools, infrastructure, water supply and such. FSC® also ensures that forest workers have the right to form unions. At the same time, they are guaranteed a fair wage, security equipment and other social rights.
FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
The FSC® system is unique because both economic, environmental and social interests are taken care of. This means that when you buy FSC® certified goods, they are goods that have been traded on normal and legal market terms and not as a subsidy scheme for the manufacturer. This economic weighting is of great importance for the protection of the world's forests.
This means that the forest owners get a proper price for their wood and thus are not tempted to cut down and burn the forests to make quick money. On the other hand, forest owners are motivated to manage the forests with care in order to be able to make money from it in the future as well. In this way, future generations can also benefit from the forests while protecting animals and plants. "Items traded on normal and legal market terms"
