Is bamboo viscose antibacterial?

While bamboo is known for its natural antibacterial properties, recent studies reveal that these properties tend to diminish when bamboo is transformed into fibers for textiles. However, interestingly, ongoing research suggests that all types of viscose still outperform materials like cotton and polyester in terms of antibacterial qualities.

The key lies in zinc, a trace mineral renowned in the medical industry for its bacteria-fighting prowess. During the production of viscose, even though the antibacterial aspects of bamboo may decrease, traces of zinc with
bacteria-killing abilities remain within the fibers. This residual zinc is what makes viscose textiles inherently more antibacterial than their cotton and polyester counterparts.

Zinc, a naturally occurring trace mineral present in all cells and fluids of the body, is typically obtained through our diet as it gets absorbed in the intestines. However, the zinc in viscose doesn't get absorbed into the body; instead, it works its antibacterial magic on the surface.

Beyond its antibacterial qualities, bamboo viscose boasts superior absorbency and quick-drying properties compared to cotton and polyester. This, coupled with the persistent traces of zinc, creates an environment less conducive for bacteria to thrive in bamboo textiles. So, choosing bamboo over cotton or polyester not only helps ward off odors but also promotes a more comfortable experience.
