Can you hand wash everything

Short answer: Yes, hand washing is gentler than any machine. On the other hand it takes longer, and a garment rarely gets quite as clean as it would in a machine.

Hand washing causes the least wear

Without a drum there is no mechanical movement against the fabric. Clothes are not tossed around or rubbed against other items, and there are no zips or buttons to catch. That makes hand washing the gentlest way to wash, giving colour, surface and elastic a longer life. See bamboo boxers.

It is rarely as clean

A machine moves water through the fabric again and again. That movement is what loosens sweat and grease from the fibres. By hand you rarely manage the same thoroughness, and greasy stains in particular can stay. For very dirty clothes, a machine at a low temperature is often the better choice. Rinse thoroughly

Soap left in the fabric causes itching and makes it stiff. It is the most common hand washing mistake, because it is easy to stop before the water runs clear. Rinse in clean water two or three times until there is no more foam. Then the clothes feel soft again once dry. See bamboo sweatwear.

Lukewarm water and a little detergent

Lukewarm water is enough for hand washing. It should feel comfortable on your hands, not hot. Use only a small amount of detergent, ideally a mild one for delicates, and dissolve it in the water before adding the clothes. Too much detergent only makes rinsing take longer.

Squeeze, do not rub

Put the clothes in the water and squeeze them gently a few times so the water gets through. Avoid rubbing the fabric hard against itself, as that can cause pilling and a rough surface. Leave it to soak for a quarter of an hour if needed, then squeeze again.

Do not wring

Once rinsed, it is tempting to wring clothes hard. That pulls on the fibres and can stretch the fabric out of shape. Press the water out between your hands instead, then roll the garment in a dry towel and press lightly. Most of the water is gone and it dries faster.

Dry flat or on a hanger

Heavy, wet clothes can stretch a lot on a line. Lay knits and sweatwear flat on a rack so they keep their shape. Lighter items like underwear and socks can hang from a peg. Avoid direct sun and radiators, which can dry the fabric unevenly and make it stiff.

When hand washing makes sense

Hand washing works best for single delicate items and for quick rinses while travelling. With a few socks and some underwear in your suitcase, a wash in the sink in the evening does the job. For everyday laundry, a machine is more practical and gives a more even result.

Frequently asked questions

Can all clothes be hand washed

Yes. Hand washing is gentler than any machine, but it takes longer and does not remove grease as well as a machine that moves water through the fabric.

When is hand washing best

What is the most common hand washing mistake

Not rinsing enough. Soap stays in the fabric, makes it stiff and can cause itching against the skin, so rinse until the water runs clear.
