Checklist when something has shrunk

Short answer: Check how much, check the care label, and try stretching the fabric while it is damp. If it has shrunk more than five percent, the piece rarely comes back.

Measure before you decide

A piece that feels smaller has not necessarily shrunk. Two centimetres may just as well be tolerance, and freshly washed clothes often feel tighter. Lay the piece flat and measure it with a tape. Compare with a similar unwashed piece or the size guide. Then you know whether there is a problem. See bamboo underwear for men.

Give it a day of wear

Knitted fabric gives a little as it warms up against the body. A piece that feels tight straight after washing may sit normally after an hour. Wear it for a day before deciding. If it still feels too small in the evening, it has shrunk. If it feels right, the fabric just needed to settle.

Check what the label said

If it was washed hotter than the label says, you have found the cause. Look at the care label and compare it with the programme you used. It is easy for a single piece to end up in a hotter wash with towels or bedding. See socks for men and women and check those labels too.

The tumble dryer is a common cause

Tumble drying is one of the most common reasons clothes shrink. The heat makes the fibres pull together, and it happens fast. If the piece has been in the dryer, even briefly, that is probably the explanation. Air drying takes longer but keeps the shape far better, especially for knits.

Stretch while damp

A damp knitted fabric can be stretched a little back into shape. Wash the piece again in cold water, press the water out gently without wringing, and lay it flat on a towel. Then stretch it calmly in length and width, a little at a time. Let it dry flat. See bamboo sweatwear.

Do not expect all of it back

Stretching can help, but it has limits. A little shrinkage can often be corrected so the piece fits again. Beyond five percent, it rarely comes all the way back. Do not pull too hard either, or the fabric may turn crooked or thin in places. Slightly shorter is better than pulled out of shape.

Find another use for it

A piece that cannot be saved can still be useful. A shrunken T-shirt works for sleeping in or as a base layer, where fit matters less. If it no longer fits at all, pass it on to someone it does fit. That way the fabric is not wasted.

Avoid it next time

Follow the temperature on the label and skip the tumble dryer. Those two things alone prevent nearly all shrinkage in knits. Sort your laundry by temperature, so a piece meant for a cool wash does not end up in a hot one. Dry knits flat or on a hanger.

Frequently asked questions

Can shrunken clothes be saved

Partly. Stretch the fabric gently while damp and let it dry flat. Shrinkage beyond five percent rarely comes all the way back.

Why do clothes shrink

Because of heat. Washing above the stated temperature or tumble drying makes the fibres pull together, and it happens quickly.

How do you avoid shrinkage next time

Follow the temperature on the label and skip the tumble dryer. Those two things alone prevent nearly all shrinkage in knits.
