Coffee stains, what to do first
Sep 12, 2026
Short answer: Rinse with cold water from the inside straight away. If there is milk in the coffee, it is both a colour stain and a protein stain, so the water must not be warm.
Cold water first
Coffee bonds to fibre quickly, so the first minutes matter most. If you rinse within a minute, most of it comes out before the colour sets. Hold the inside of the fabric under the tap so the coffee is pushed out the way it came in. This applies to women's bamboo joggers, where a cup easily tips into your lap.
Dab up the worst
If there is no water to hand, dab the coffee up with a clean napkin straight away. Do not rub, as that spreads the stain and presses it into the fabric. Work from the edge inwards and move to a clean part once it picks up colour. The less coffee left in the fabric, the easier the rest.
Milk makes it a double stain
Milk contains protein, which coagulates in heat and bonds to the fibre. Coffee with milk is therefore both a colour stain and a protein stain. That means the water must not be warm, however tempting it is. This also applies to men's bestsellers, where the stain often lands on the chest.
Treat the rest before washing
Put a little liquid detergent directly on the wet fabric and work it in gently. Leave it for about ten minutes so it can loosen the remaining colour. Rinse in cold water and check the stain. The garment is then ready for a normal wash, including Copenhagen Bamboo bestsellers.
Wash as usual
After pretreatment, wash the garment as usual with similar colours. Turn it inside out first. If there was milk in the coffee, choose a low temperature the first time so protein traces are not set. Otherwise follow the care label and use a programme for soft fabrics.
Check before drying
Always check the stain before drying. A coffee stain that dries in with heat from a tumble dryer or radiator can become permanent. If a brown edge or shadow remains, repeat the treatment with detergent and cold water, and wash again. Only dry the garment once the stain is fully gone.
Dried coffee
If the coffee has dried, soak the garment in cold water with a little detergent for about an hour. The water softens the dried colour so it loosens from the fibre more easily. Then treat the stain with detergent directly on the fabric and wash again. It may take a couple of rounds.
Brown edges
A coffee stain often leaves a darker ring, because the colour gathers where the liquid dries last. The ring can be harder to remove than the stain itself. So treat a slightly larger area than the stain, making sure the edge gets detergent too, and dab from the outside in when you rinse.
Frequently asked questions
What about dried coffee
Soak the garment in cold water with detergent for an hour, then treat the stain. Repeat if a brown shadow is still visible afterwards.
Does vinegar help
Some people use vinegar on light fabric. Test it first on a hidden spot and rinse thoroughly afterwards so no smell stays in the fabric.
Can coffee stains become permanent
Yes, if they dry in with heat. So keep the garment out of the dryer until the stain is gone, and use cold water if there was milk in the coffee.
