Deodorant marks, how to get them off

Short answer: White deodorant streaks can be wiped off with a damp cloth or a pair of clean socks. If they have been washed in, soaking in lukewarm water with detergent helps before the garment is washed again.

Fresh marks on your way out

If you spot a white streak just before leaving, it can usually be removed on the spot. Rub gently with a damp cloth, clean socks or a piece of fabric. The streaks sit on the surface and come off easily. This also applies to a bamboo sweatshirt for men.

Fabric against fabric

A piece of fabric similar to the garment is often the best tool. Rub lightly over the mark in small movements. The friction lifts the white residue off the surface without wearing the fabric. Avoid fingernails or a hard brush, as they can roughen soft fabric and leave a dull patch.

Washed in deposits

If the marks have been through a wash, they sit in the fibres and may have hardened. Soak the garment for two hours in lukewarm water with detergent, gently working the area now and then. Then wash as usual. This works for most clothes, including bestsellers from Copenhagen Bamboo.

Prevention is easiest

The simplest fix is to let deodorant dry completely before you get dressed. Wait a few minutes and use no more than you need. Put tops on arms first, so the neckline does not brush over your underarms. This goes for all bamboo tops for women.

Dark clothes show it most

White marks show mostly on black, navy and other dark colours. On light clothes they are less visible, but yellow stains can form over time instead. If you wear a lot of dark clothing, make a habit of always letting deodorant dry before you dress.

Rinse underarms after wear

Even when nothing shows, deodorant residue often stays in the fabric after a day. Rinse the underarms in cold water before the garment goes in the laundry basket. That stops residue building up over several washes. It also keeps the fabric softer, since no hard layer forms.

Keep heat off the marks

Heat from a tumble dryer or iron can melt residue into the fibres. Check clothes after washing and let them air dry if marks remain. Then you can treat them again. Do not iron over a mark, as it becomes harder to remove afterwards.

Wash inside out

Turn clothes inside out before washing. That way water and detergent reach the side where the deodorant sits. It loosens residue with every wash and keeps the outside looking good. Always follow the care label and wash at the intended temperature.

Frequently asked questions

Why do the marks get hard

Because deodorant contains waxes and salts that set in the fabric. Once they dry in or are exposed to heat, they are harder to loosen in a normal wash.

Can the marks be removed completely

Usually yes, as long as they have not been exposed to heat many times. Soaking in lukewarm water with detergent followed by a normal wash handles most cases.

Does a different deodorant help

Yes. Clear gels and roll ons leave fewer white marks than solid sticks. Whatever the type, letting the deodorant dry before you get dressed helps.
