Fit in underwear, what to look for

Short answer: The waistband should lie flat without you feeling it, the legs should not ride up, and the gusset needs enough width to stay put. When those three things are right, underwear fits all day.

The waistband first

A waistband that rolls or leaves a red mark is wrong. It should lie flat all the way round and hold everything in place without pressing. If it rolls down at the front, it is often too large. If it digs into the skin, it is too small. Check front and back. See the styles in bamboo boxers.

The legs should stay in place

If the legs ride up during the day, the style or size is wrong. It often happens with short legs that have nothing to grip when you walk, sit or cycle. Longer legs lie better against the thigh and stay where they should. Longer legs often solve it, see bamboo underwear for men.

The width of the gusset

A narrow gusset bunches up and chafes, especially when you walk a lot or sit for long. A wider gusset spreads the fabric and stays put all day. It is a detail people rarely think about, but one you notice at once. Look for a style with some width in the gusset, as in bamboo panties.

The fabric should follow the body

A soft fabric with some stretch follows the body when you move and settles back afterwards. A stiff fabric creates folds and can ride up. Pull gently on the fabric and see whether it gives and returns. That tells you a lot about how it will sit after a long day.

Seams should not be felt

Seams at the leg openings and gusset sit close to the skin all day. A thick or stiff seam can chafe, especially where you move a lot. Look for flat seams that lie smooth. Run your fingers over them before wearing. What feels hard in the hand often feels hard on the body.

Test it in daily life

A mirror does not show everything. Put the underwear on and move as you would on an ordinary day. Sit down, stand up, climb a staircase and bend forward. If you feel the waistband or the legs ride up, it is not the right style or size.

Care after washing

Underwear keeps its shape best when washed according to the care label and not dried at high heat. Turn it inside out and use a laundry bag if you wash it with clothes that have zips. Hang it to dry or lay it flat, and the waistband keeps its spring for longer.

When it is time for new ones

When the waistband no longer springs back, or the legs start riding up when they did not before, the underwear is worn out. The fit is no longer the same, and it is time for new ones. Keep an eye on it when folding laundry. A slack waistband is easier to feel in the hand than on the body.

Frequently asked questions

Should underwear fit tightly

No. It should sit close without leaving marks on the skin. Underwear that is too tight soon becomes uncomfortable, and underwear that is too loose rides up and bunches.

How do I know the size is right

Put it on and sit down for five minutes. If you feel the waistband, it is too small. If it slides down when you stand up, it is too large.

Does underwear get bigger over time

Without elastane, yes. With elastane it springs back after wear, as long as it is washed and dried according to the care label and not at high heat.
