How often should T-shirts be washed

Short answer: After each day of wear if the T-shirt has touched your skin directly. If you wore an undershirt beneath it, it can often be worn twice. Smell is the best guide, not how the garment looks.

Direct skin contact needs a wash

A T-shirt worn with nothing underneath absorbs sweat and skin oils all day. It needs washing even when it looks clean, because most of this cannot be seen. If you leave it and wear it again, the smell sets in more easily. This applies to all styles in men's most popular worn directly on the skin.

With a layer underneath

If you wear a thin undershirt beneath, it absorbs the sweat instead. The outer layer then has less contact with your skin and can be worn again. The undershirt, however, needs washing after each day. It is a simple way to save washes on your nicer pieces. See the styles in men's bamboo undershirts.

Airing between wears

Hang clothes up freely overnight instead of putting them in the basket or on a chair. Air reaches the whole fabric, and moisture and light odours can fade. A hanger by an open window is enough. This extends the time between washes for a piece like a bamboo sweatshirt for women, which does not sit directly on the skin.

Smell is the best sign

Dirt can be seen, but sweat rarely can. Smell is therefore the best indicator of whether something needs washing. Check under the arms and at the collar, where sweat gathers first. If there is even a slight smell, the T-shirt goes in the wash. If it smells neutral after a night of airing, it can often be worn once more.

The season plays a part

In summer most people sweat more, and a T-shirt is used up faster. In winter, with more layers and cooler air, the same piece can last a little longer, especially with an undershirt beneath. Adjust your rhythm to the weather and to how active your day has been rather than following a fixed rule.

Rotate between several T-shirts

Every wash wears the fabric a little. That is why it helps to own several T-shirts and switch between them. Each piece then gets fewer washes and more time to rest between wears. It also gives your washing routine some slack, so you do not have to wash the same T-shirt several times a week.

Wash gently when you do

When the T-shirt needs washing, do it gently. Turn it inside out, choose 40 degrees and use no more detergent than needed. Hang it up afterwards instead of tumble drying. That way it keeps its shape and softness longer, even when washed after each day of wear.

Training is an exception

T-shirts worn for training or hard physical work are a separate case. They are full of sweat after a short time and must be washed after every use, without exception. Do not leave them crumpled in a bag; hang them up until they go in the machine so the smell does not set in.

Frequently asked questions

Can you tell by looking whether clothes need washing

Not always. Smell is the best indicator, not visible dirt. Sweat and skin oils stay in the fabric long before they can be seen.

Does frequent washing cause much wear

Every wash causes a little wear. That is why rotating between several T-shirts is a good idea, so each piece gets fewer washes over the year.

What about T-shirts used for training

They must be washed after every use, without exception. Hang them up after wear so they do not stay damp until they go in the machine.
