How often should underwear be replaced

Short answer: Underwear should be replaced when the elastic no longer holds, the fabric has worn thin, or the colour has faded unevenly. For most people that happens after one to two years, depending on how many pairs are in rotation.

The elastic goes first

After many washes, the waistband loses its stretch and starts to roll, slide down or give at the sides. When that happens, no washing or care will help, as the elastic does not come back. A pair that no longer sits where it should is uncomfortable all day. That is the clearest sign it is on its way out.

Thin fabric is the next sign

Hold the fabric up to the light. If you can see through the places with the most wear, the piece is on its way out. It often happens where friction is greatest. Thin fabric also loses its softness and can start to pill. Top up in good time so you are never short of pairs.

The colour tells you something too

When the colour turns patchy or fades unevenly, the fabric has been through many washes. It does not mean the piece must go at once, but the end is getting closer. Black pairs show it most clearly, while light colours often turn slightly grey.

The fit changes

Underwear that has lost its shape can ride up, bunch or sit crooked. It is not always the elastic alone, but fabric that has given over time. If you find yourself adjusting your underwear during the day, it is time for new pairs. Comfort and fit often go before the fabric wears through.

Replace a little at a time

Buy a pack a couple of times a year rather than replacing the whole drawer at once. That way you always have a mix of new and worn pairs, and the cost is spread over the year. It also makes it easier to see which pairs are oldest. See the packs in bamboo boxers.

How to extend their life

40 degrees, no dryer and enough pairs in rotation make the biggest difference. Fabric softener leaves a film on the fibres, so leave it out. The more pairs you have, the fewer washes each one gets, and the longer they last. The same goes for other layers close to the body, such as bamboo slips.

Loungewear wears the same way

Soft sets worn every evening wear out by the same rules as underwear. The waistband gives, and the fabric thins at the knees and seat. Two sets in rotation last longer than one. See the soft sets in bamboo jogging suit when it is time to replace them.

What to do with the old ones

Clean old pairs can often go to textile collection, where they are reused as rags or filling. Check your local rules, as what is accepted varies. Cut off the elastic first if the collection asks for it. It is a simple way to give the fabric another round.

Frequently asked questions

Can you extend their life

Yes. 40 degrees, no dryer and enough pairs in rotation make the biggest difference, keeping both elastic and fabric in better shape.

Is it unhealthy to wear old underwear

Not in itself, if it is washed. Comfort and fit go first. If you are unsure about anything with your skin, talk to your doctor.

How many new pairs should I buy at once

One pack at a time keeps the drawer up to date without a big expense, and spreads both wear and spending evenly over the year.
