How to wash bamboo underwear so it lasts
Sep 12, 2026
Short answer: Wash at 40 degrees with regular detergent, skip the fabric softener and air dry. The waistband elastic decides how long underwear lasts, and it does not tolerate heat, neither in the washing machine nor in the dryer.
Keep the temperature low
40 degrees removes sweat and dirt from normally worn underwear. Higher temperatures wear the elastic without making it noticeably cleaner. That goes for briefs and bras, where the elastic carries the fit. Choose a normal programme. See the soft models in bamboo bra.
Skip the fabric softener
Fabric softener leaves a film on the fibres and makes the fabric worse at moving moisture away from the skin. That is exactly why many choose bamboo. The fabric is soft on its own and needs no softener. Regular detergent in the recommended amount is enough.
Air drying extends its life
The tumble dryer is hard on the waistband, as heat makes the elastic lose its stretch. Underwear is thin and dries on a rack in a few hours. Hang it so the waistband is not stretched. The same goes for bamboo boxers.
Use a laundry bag for delicates
Bras with thin straps and small pieces can tangle with other laundry. A laundry bag keeps them together and protects straps and elastic from being pulled. It is a small habit that makes a clear difference. Close hooks before putting them in the bag.
Sort by colour
Wash dark with dark and light with light. It need not be a separate load just for underwear, but avoid towels and jeans that shed lint or rub. New dark pieces may release some colour at first, so wash them separately the first time if in doubt.
Do not overfill the machine
An overfilled machine means more friction and poorer rinsing. Underwear needs to move freely in the water to get clean. Fill the drum about three quarters full. That gives cleaner laundry and less wear without raising the temperature.
The same goes for loungewear
Soft lounge sets follow the same rules. 40 degrees, no softener and air drying keep the fabric soft and the fit intact. Turn them inside out before washing. See the soft sets in bamboo jogging suit.
When there are stains
Treat stains while fresh, using cold water and a little detergent. Warm water can set some stains. Rub gently and let the detergent work a few minutes before washing as normal. Avoid bleach, as it can weaken the fibres and cause uneven colour.
Frequently asked questions
Can underwear be washed at 60 degrees
It can take it, but the elastic wears faster. 40 degrees is enough for everyday washing, and the fit lasts longer.
Should it be washed separately
Not necessarily. Wash dark with dark and use a laundry bag for delicates, so straps and elastic are not pulled.
Why does the waistband go slack
Heat and time. The dryer and hot washes speed it up noticeably, while air drying and 40 degrees keep the elastic longer.
