Layers for training indoors and outdoors

Short answer: If you train both outdoors and indoors, your system has to handle two temperatures from the same base. The inner layer stays the same, and the rest is adjusted to the weather and to how hard you train.

The inner layer is the same in both places

A thin layer that moves moisture works in a warm sports hall as well as in frost. It sits close to the skin and spreads sweat so it can evaporate. Bamboo underwear for men is soft and lies smoothly under the rest of your clothes, so you only need to think about what goes on top.

Outdoors needs two more layers

An insulating mid layer and a windproof outer layer are what separate outdoors from indoors. The mid layer holds warmth, and the outer layer stops the wind. A bamboo jogging suit works as a mid layer on cool days or on its own on mild ones. On the coldest days, a windproof jacket goes over it.

Your socks change too

For indoor sport the sock should be thin, so you have good contact with shoe and floor. In frost it should be thicker to insulate. Socks for men in bamboo are soft and lie smoothly in the shoe. Choose the thickness based on where you train, and keep a pair of each in the drawer.

Indoors the heat is steady

In a sports hall the temperature is roughly the same all year. You warm up after the first few minutes, and then the inner layer and a pair of shorts or trousers do the work. Extra layers quickly become too much. Bring a top for before and after, but take it off once training starts.

Outdoors it changes all the time

Outside, temperature, wind and damp change from day to day and sometimes during a single session. That is why layers matter. You can take one off when you get warm and put it back on if the wind picks up. Start slightly cool so you do not sweat through in the first minutes.

The same base saves space

When the inner layer stays the same, you do not need two completely different training wardrobes. You can use the same pieces all year and only switch mid layer, outer layer and socks with the season. It makes packing your bag easier.

Change after training

Whether you trained inside or out, your inner layer is damp afterwards. Change into dry clothes as soon as you can, especially in winter when wet clothes cool quickly. Pack spare underwear and socks so you always have something dry to change into.

Washing and drying

Turn your clothes inside out and wash them at the temperature on the label. Skip fabric softener, which can reduce how well the fabric moves moisture. Hang everything up straight after washing and let it air dry. With several inner layers, you can rotate them so the laundry keeps up.
