Lint all over the top

Short answer: Lint is fibres from other clothes that have settled on the fabric, and it almost always happens in the washing machine or the tumble dryer. Sort by colour and material and it stops, and the sweater looks tidy again.
Where the lint comes from
Lint is not part of the sweater itself, but small fibres from other clothes washed or dried with it. They come loose in the machine and settle on whatever lies next to them. It shows most clearly on dark clothes such as bamboo sweatpants for men. So look at what goes in together.
Towels shed the most
Towels and terry shed large amounts of short fibres, and they settle on anything dark in the same machine. The more towels in the drum, the more lint there is to spread. The sweater is rarely at fault, it is what it was washed with. Wash towels separately when you can, and see the difference.
Static electricity holds on
In the dryer the fabric becomes charged, and lint clings to the surface instead of being caught by the filter. It also affects small things like bamboo socks, which pick up lint easily in the heat and friction. Dry only what needs drying, and do not cram the drum full, so the fibres can come free.
Sort by colour and material
The simplest route is to sort the laundry before it goes in the machine. Keep dark and light apart, and keep clothes that shed fibres away from clothes that collect them. Sorting takes a moment, but it removes much of the problem before it starts, and it is easier than removing lint afterwards.
Clean the lint filter
A full lint filter cannot catch any more, and then the fibres end up on the clothes instead. Take out the filter and clean it after every drying, so the dryer can do its job. It takes a few seconds and makes a clear difference to how clean dark clothes come out.
Remove lint with a roller
If lint is already on the sweater, a lint roller is the fastest fix. Roll lightly across the fabric in one direction and change the sheet when it is full. It lifts the fibres without wearing on the material, and you can do it right before you put the clothes on.
Wash separately
Two washes kept apart make a clear difference, also for bamboo boxers and anything that sits close to the skin. When the linty things are not in the load, there is nothing to cling to the fabric. If you have few items of each kind, wait for a full machine rather than mixing everything in a half load.
Give it time
A fabric collects less lint over time. After about ten washes the surface is smoother and collects less, so the first stretch is the worst. Keep sorting and cleaning the filter even when the problem seems gone. It is the small habits that keep the sweater free of lint in the long run.
Frequently asked questions
Can lint be washed off
Partly. A wash on its own with an extra rinse removes some, but the rest must come off mechanically with a lint roller, so using both works best.
Does vinegar help against lint
A little, because it reduces static electricity. It does not replace sorting, so use it as an extra and still keep towels and dark clothes apart.
Does a fabric collect less lint over time
Yes, after about ten washes the surface is smoother and collects less. The first washes are therefore the most important ones to sort properly, so the fabric stays clean.
