Myth, bamboo cannot take machine washing
Sep 12, 2026
Short answer: Bamboo viscose can be machine washed without any trouble. The rule is forty degrees and ideally a gentle cycle, and the fabric will last for many years. It is the heat, not the machine, that wears out the fibres.
Where the myth comes from
Many people link a soft, light fabric with something that needs careful hand washing. That is understandable, because bamboo viscose feels smooth and fine against the skin. But softness says nothing about how a fabric copes with a washing machine. Temperature and drying are what decide whether it keeps its shape.
Forty degrees is enough
Everyday dirt such as sweat, skin oils and dust comes out at forty degrees. A higher temperature adds nothing for clothes worn a day or two, but it does increase wear on the fibres. Make forty degrees your standard setting. The same rule applies across all our men's clothing.
A gentle cycle extends the life of the fabric
A gentle cycle uses more water and a lower spin speed than a standard programme. The clothes rub less against the drum and against each other. Over many washes this noticeably reduces wear, especially on the surface where pilling can start. If your machine has no gentle cycle, choose a low spin instead.
Heat is the real problem
Washing above sixty degrees and tumble drying on high heat is what damages the fabric, not the machine itself. Heat weakens the fibres and the elastic permanently, and that damage cannot be undone. Keep the temperature low in both washing and drying, also for a bamboo hoodie for men that gets worn often.
How to dry it
The gentlest method is to hang your clothes to dry. Give them a light shake when they come out of the machine and ease them into shape so the seams sit straight. A hanger or a drying rack works well. If you use a tumble dryer, choose the lowest heat and take things out while slightly damp.
Sort before you wash
Wash bamboo clothing with other light fabrics. Heavy items such as jeans, towels and anything with zips rub harder against the surface and can cause pilling. Close zips and turn garments inside out to protect the front. Small habits like these help men's bamboo joggers look good for longer.
Hand washing is rarely needed
Hand washing only makes sense if the care label clearly asks for it. In most cases the machine is easier and more consistent, because it holds the temperature precisely. By hand it is easy to wring the fabric too hard or use water that is too hot. Always read the care label first and follow it.
The right amount of detergent
Bamboo viscose does not need much detergent. Too much soap can settle in the fibres and make the fabric stiff. Follow the dosage on the pack, and for lightly soiled clothes use a little less rather than a little more. A mild detergent without bleach is a good choice, as it protects colours and fibres.
Frequently asked questions
Can bamboo viscose be machine washed
Yes. Forty degrees and ideally a gentle cycle is the recommended approach, and the fabric can handle many hundreds of washes as long as you keep the heat down.
Should you hand wash instead
No, that is not necessary. Hand washing is only relevant if the label clearly requires it, and otherwise the machine gives a more even and gentle result.
What actually damages the fabric
High temperature. Both hot washing and tumble drying on high heat weaken the fibres and the elastic permanently, and that damage cannot be reversed afterwards.
