Myth, close fitting clothes are always warmer

Short answer: Close fitting clothes remove the layer of air between fabric and skin. Since air is what insulates, a close fitting layer can actually be cooler than a loose one. The exception is outdoors in the wind.

Where the myth comes from

When clothes fit closely, they feel warm at first, because the fabric touches the skin everywhere. That is why many people think tight clothing is the warmest choice. But the feeling of being wrapped up is not the same as insulation. What keeps you warm over time is air, and a close fitting layer leaves little room for it.

Air between fabric and skin insulates

Still air is a good insulator. A loose layer holds a thin layer of warm air between fabric and skin, and that slows down heat loss. A close fitting layer pushes the air out, and much of the insulation goes with it. A slightly looser undershirt under a sweater can therefore keep you warmer, see bamboo undershirts for men.

Close fitting clothes conduct heat away

When fabric touches the skin everywhere, heat moves straight into the material and on to the surface. It is the same principle that makes a thin, close fitting layer feel cool on a warm day. In winter it works against you. A close fitting inner layer is not warm in itself, it depends on what you wear over it.

The exception is wind

Outdoors in the wind, a close fitting layer is warmer, because the wind cannot get in between fabric and skin and blow the warm air away. A loose layer flapping in the wind loses heat quickly. That is why close fitting clothes work well under a jacket on a cold, windy day, see bestsellers for men.

Moisture changes the picture

A close fitting layer sits against the skin and takes up moisture when you sweat. If the fabric gets wet and stays against your skin, it feels cold, because moisture conducts heat away. A fabric that moves moisture away from the skin helps here. On an active day, keeping your skin dry matters just as much.

Feet and socks

The same applies to your feet. A shoe that is too tight compresses the sock and removes the air layer, so your feet get cold faster. Thick socks in a tight shoe can be colder than thinner socks with a little room. Make sure your toes can move freely, see socks for men.

How to combine layers

A thin, soft inner layer close to the body that moves moisture away from the skin, with a looser layer on top that holds air, is often the best combination indoors. Outdoors, add an outer layer that stops the wind. That way you get the benefits of both without squeezing the air out of the layer that insulates.

Fit in everyday life

Choose the fit based on what the garment needs to do. An inner layer can fit closely, but it should not squeeze. A mid layer can be a little looser. Clothes that are too tight also restrict movement and can feel uncomfortable over a whole day. Soft everyday clothing fits best when it follows the body without pressing.

Frequently asked questions

Are close fitting clothes warmer

Indoors, often not. A loose layer holds warm air between fabric and skin, which a close fitting layer pushes out, and that air is what insulates.

When is close fitting clothing warmest

Outdoors in the wind. The close layer stops cold air from getting in between fabric and skin and blowing the warm air away.

What is warmest indoors

A loose outer layer over a thin inner layer. That traps air between them, and it is this air that insulates best over time.
