Socks that squeeze the calf, what to do

Short answer: Go up a size or choose a style with a soft cuff. A red mark around the calf is a sign that the sock is too small or too tight in the leg, not a sign that it fits well.

The mark means the size is too small

A mark from the cuff shows that the elastic is working too hard. It does not improve with wear, because knitted socks only stretch a little, and the elastic contracts again after every wash. Many women with fuller calves get the best result by going up a size in socks for women, even if the foot fits the smaller size.

Socks only stretch a little

It is tempting to think a tight sock will give after a few days. It does not really. The yarn can stretch a little during the day, but it pulls back in the wash. That is why a sock has to fit from the first time you put it on. If you feel tightness in the morning, it will not get better as the day goes on.

A soft cuff rather than a tight one

Some styles have a wider, softer cuff that spreads the pressure over a larger area. That means the sock stays up without cutting into the skin. They are the right choice for fuller calves and for long days when you sit a lot. Look for a broad band when you choose from socks for men and women.

Legs swell in the afternoon

What fits in the morning can feel tight at the end of the day, because many people get slightly swollen legs after long hours standing or sitting at a desk. Choose your size based on how the sock feels in the afternoon. If your legs swell a lot, or only one leg swells, it is a good idea to talk to your doctor.

For men with strong calves

Men who cycle, run or stand a lot often have strong calves, and a standard cuff can quickly feel too tight. Going up a size helps, even if the foot fits the smaller one. Look for styles with a soft band in socks for men, and wear them for a full working day before buying more pairs of the same kind.

A shorter leg as an alternative

If the cuff always lands on the widest part of the calf, a shorter sock can be the answer. A style that ends just above the ankle has the cuff at a narrower point and therefore squeezes less. It suits trainers and most everyday shoes. For boots and cold days, however, a leg that reaches higher up is more comfortable.

Watch the heat when washing and drying

High heat can make the knit contract slightly and stiffen the elastic. Wash at 40 degrees and let your socks air dry instead of using the tumble dryer. That way they keep the size they had when you bought them. A sock that has shrunk just a little can be enough to leave a mark around the calf.

Frequently asked questions

Can you stretch a sock

Only temporarily. The elastic contracts again after washing, so a sock that is too tight from the start will keep squeezing however much you stretch it.

Are tight socks dangerous

If it bothers you every day or the skin feels sore, talk to your doctor. Otherwise it is a comfort issue that is usually solved with a larger size or a softer cuff.

Are there socks without elastic

There are styles with a very soft, wide cuff that sit more loosely around the calf. Without any elastic at all, though, a sock often slides down into the shoe during the day.
