The clothes are not dry by morning

Short answer: Clothes dry slowly when the air in the room is already damp, or when the fabric lies close together. More air around the fabric matters more than more heat. Hang your clothes with space between them and let the air change.

Damp air cannot take more water

When clothes dry, the water moves into the air. If the air in the room is already full of moisture, there is no room for more, and drying stalls. That is why laundry can hang all night in a closed room and still feel clammy in the morning. The problem is rarely the clothes but the air around them.

Air exchange matters most

A closed room with wet clothes becomes saturated within an hour, and then evaporation nearly stops. Open a window slightly so damp air can leave and drier air can come in. Then men's bamboo sweatshirts dry noticeably faster than in a room where the air stands still all night.

Dense fabric dries from the inside

A thick layer of fabric holds water in the middle, where air cannot reach. That is why the surface feels dry while the inside is still wet. Thin items like bamboo socks for men are dry long before the rest. Expect the thickest parts, such as waistbands, edges and seams, to be the last to dry.

Water is hard to dry

After spinning, a full machine typically holds half a kilo to a kilo of water, and it has to go somewhere. All that water must enter the air in the room. That explains why a full load in a small room can make the air clammy. So do not hang everything at once if the room is small.

How to make the night enough

Hang the clothes with good spacing so air can move between the pieces. Turn them once before you go to bed so both sides get air. Leave the door open so the moisture does not stay in the room. It also works for bamboo underwear for men and for anything else that should be dry tomorrow.

Does a radiator help

Only if the air can be exchanged. Otherwise the room just gets warm and damp, and the clothes still dry slowly. Warm air can hold more water, but it still has to leave the room. A radiator without air exchange only moves the problem. Place the clothes where there is draught and space instead.

A dehumidifier instead of heat

In a closed room, a dehumidifier removes the water instead of moving it. It does this better than heat, which only lets the air hold a little more moisture without removing it. If you have one, put it in the room with the clothes and close the door. Without one, an open window is the next best thing.

Think about the pieces

Some pieces dry faster than others, and it helps to know beforehand. If something is needed tomorrow, hang the thickest parts first and give them the most space and air. Thin items follow on their own. With several layers, make sure they do not touch each other.

How much water is in a wash

After spinning, typically half a kilo to a kilo of water in a full machine. All that water has to go into the room air, which is why air exchange matters so much.
