The top rides up under an outer layer

Short answer: A top rides up when the outer layer is stiffer than the inner one and drags the fabric along. A smooth inner layer and a little extra length stop it.

Friction between two layers

If the outer layer is rough on the inside, it grabs the inner one with every movement and pulls it up. The more you move, the more it creeps. It often happens over soft clothes such as men's bamboo joggers, when a stiffer outer layer takes the fabric with it as you reach or sit.

Length decides how bad it gets

A short top has less fabric to hold on with and so rides up faster. Choose a style that reaches a little way past the hip, like long sleeve bamboo t-shirts. Then there is enough fabric for the top to stay put, even when you raise your arms or lean forward.

Two rough surfaces grip

When two rough surfaces lie against each other, two things happen: friction rises, and the inner layer follows the outer. A soft, smooth fabric slides instead. Think about what lies outside and inside before you combine the layers. It is the combination of layers that decides, not a single garment.

How to stop it

Wear a smooth layer innermost and never put two rough surfaces together. Choose an outer layer with a smooth inside, so it slides over the top instead of gripping it. Several styles in the men's range have a smooth outside, see all men's clothing.

Tuck it in

A top that is tucked into the trousers cannot creep up. Worn loose over them, it can. If you prefer to wear the top outside, make sure it is long enough to stay put. Check yourself in the mirror when you raise your arms and see whether the top follows.

Does a bigger size help

Only if it is also longer. Length decides, not width. A wider but equally short top rides up just as much. So look at the length from shoulder to hem when you choose. Compare with a top that stays put and pick the next one by the same length.

Can you sew the layers together

It is rarely done, and it limits movement. When two layers are sewn together they cannot slide against each other, and that creates tension as you move. It is a fix that creates new problems. Choose layers that fit together from the start and let each layer move freely.

Why it happens most in winter

In winter there are more layers, and dry fabrics grip each other better. That is why a top that was never a problem in summer suddenly rides up in cool weather. The fabric has not changed, the combination has. Adjust the layers instead of replacing the top.
