What pilling is in physical terms

Short answer: Pilling is loose fibre ends rolled into small balls that stay attached to the fabric. The ball holds on because a few fibres are still anchored in the surface, so it does not simply fall off by itself.

Fabric is made of many short fibres

A yarn is spun from many fibres twisted together. Each fibre has two ends, and some of them stick out slightly from the yarn. In new fabric most ends lie flat, but they are still there. They are what can later turn into pills as the garment is worn and washed over time.

Three steps in the process

First, friction lifts fibre ends, then they tangle into a ball, and finally the ball is held in place by a few anchor fibres. Each step needs rubbing, so pills do not form in a day. It happens on all soft fabrics, including bamboo joggers for men worn for many hours at a stretch.

Why the ball stays put

A pill is not loose. It hangs on the fabric through a few fibres still in the yarn. As long as those fibres hold, the ball stays. When they break or pull out, it falls off. The balance between fibre strength and friction decides how long a pill hangs on.

Why strong fibres pill the most

If the anchor fibres are strong, they do not break, and the ball stays. Weaker fibres let go by themselves, so the ball disappears before you notice it. That is why pills show most on blends with strong fibres, such as a bamboo tank top for men, where some fibres hold on better.

Pills are not a sign of poor quality

Many people think pills mean poor clothing. Often it is the opposite. Soft fabrics with many fine fibre ends pill more easily than hard, smooth ones. Pilling is part of the price of softness and not necessarily a sign that the fabric is weak or worn out.

Pilling stops again

A fabric holds only a certain number of loose fibre ends. Once they have been lifted, tangled and removed, there are no more to use. That is why pilling usually eases after the first washes. The fabric does not get thinner, because only the loose ends disappear.

What you can do

Shave the pills off with a fabric shaver on dry fabric, and wash inside out from then on. Lay the garment flat on a table and move the shaver lightly over it without pressing. It also works on socks for men, where pills often gather at the heel and toe.

Prevent it with simple habits

Wash inside out, use a laundry bag and avoid washing soft clothes with items that have zips or rough surfaces. Air dry instead of tumble drying. Also avoid carrying a bag with a rough strap against the same spot every day, as that adds extra friction right there.

Frequently asked questions

Do pills mean poor quality

No, often the opposite. Strong fibres hold on to the balls better, and soft fabrics pill more easily than hard, smooth ones.

Does pilling stop at some point

Yes, once the loose fibre ends are used up, usually after three to five washes. After that the fabric is generally settled.

Can it be prevented

Partly, by washing inside out and avoiding friction against rough surfaces. A laundry bag and air drying help too.
