Why does my T-shirt sit crooked

Short answer: A T-shirt sits crooked if the side seams have twisted in the wash, or if the shoulder width does not fit. The first can usually be fixed, the second cannot. It is worth finding out which of the two it is.

Twisting comes from washing

Knitted fabric can twist if it is spun hard or washed in a full machine. The stitches are pulled out of line, and if the fabric dries that way, the shape stays. You see it most clearly at the side seams, which no longer run straight down but turn forward over the hip. See bamboo sweatshirts for men.

How to tell the difference

Lay the T-shirt flat on a table. If the side seam runs at an angle from the armpit towards the front, it is twisting. If the seams lie straight but the shoulder seam sits wrong when worn, it is the size. The test takes a minute and tells you whether to fix the fabric or change size.

Fix it while the fabric is damp

Pull the side seams into place and let the garment dry flat. This works best straight after washing, while the fibres are still soft. Lay the T-shirt on a towel, straighten the seams and smooth the fabric with your hands. The shape usually returns after one or two washes. See all men's clothing.

Stop it happening again

Spin at a lower speed and do not fill the machine completely. Clothes with room to move twist less. Take the T-shirt out as soon as the cycle ends and give it a light shake. A garment left crumpled in the drum for hours easily dries into a crooked shape.

Drying on a hanger or flat

A wet T-shirt on a thin hanger can stretch the shoulders and form bumps that make it sit crooked. Drying flat on a rack or towel keeps the shape best. If you prefer to hang it, use a wide hanger or hang it over the middle of a rail.

Shoulder width cannot be fixed

If the shoulder seam sits wrong, it is the size. If the seam lies on the upper arm, the T-shirt is too big across the shoulders. If it sits towards the neck, it is too small. Washing and ironing cannot change this, because the cut itself does not fit. See most popular for men.

Where the shoulder seam should sit

The shoulder seam should sit on the outermost point of the shoulder, where the arm begins. There the T-shirt follows the body without pulling or hanging. Check it in a mirror with your arms by your sides. If the seam sits right there, the size is usually right across the upper body.

When both play a part

Sometimes it is twisting and size at once. A T-shirt that is slightly too big can hang more crooked, because there is extra fabric to turn. Straighten the seams first and see how it sits afterwards. If the shoulders are still wrong, the next step is to try another size.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a T-shirt sit crooked

Either because the side seams have twisted in the wash, or because the shoulder width does not fit the body. Twisting is easiest to see where the side seam runs across the hip.

Can a twisted T-shirt be fixed

Yes. Pull the side seams into place while the fabric is damp and let it dry flat on a towel. The shape usually returns after one or two washes.

What cannot be fixed

The shoulder width. If the shoulder seam sits on the upper arm or up by the neck, the size is wrong, and neither washing nor ironing can change that.
