Why identical items can feel different

Short answer: Two items in the same size and model can still feel different. It usually comes down to the colour, the production batch and how many times the item has been washed. The differences are small, and they shrink over time.

Same model, not always the same feel

Many people notice it when they put a new T-shirt next to one they have worn for a while. The size and model are the same, yet the fabric does not feel quite identical. That is not a fault in itself. Clothes are dyed, sewn and washed, and each step can add a small difference.

Colour can change the feel

Colour is often the first explanation. Dark colours need more dyeing than light ones, which can make the fabric slightly firmer, especially at first. If you own the same model in black and in a light shade, you may notice a small difference even though cut and size match. Take bamboo T-shirts for men as an example.

Why new items show it most

The extra dye is most noticeable while the fabric is new. That is why the gap between a dark and a light version feels biggest during the first few wears. As the fabric is worn and washed, the surface softens, and the two colours move closer together in how they feel.

Production batches vary slightly

Fabric is made in batches. Fabric from two different deliveries can differ minimally in weight, even with the same recipe and supplier. You rarely see these differences, but you can sometimes feel them when you hold two items side by side. This applies to basics such as bamboo underwear for men too.

Washing changes the fabric

An item washed ten times feels different from a new one. Washing softens the fibres, and the fabric settles to your body and the way you use it. A new pair of boxers will almost always feel a little firmer than the pair that has been in your drawer for six months. You can see this clearly with bamboo boxers.

Compare new with new

If you want to know whether two items really differ, compare them at the same stage. Put two new items side by side, or wait until both have been washed a few times. Comparing a new item with a well worn one mostly measures washed against unwashed fabric, not the product itself.

How to even out the difference faster

Wash the new item before you wear it, and wash it with the rest of your laundry following the care label. Use the same temperature and detergent as usual. That way the new item gets the same treatment as the old ones, and the difference becomes smaller with every wash.

Give the new item some time

It is tempting to judge a new garment on day one. But the feel of the fabric changes most in the first weeks. Wear it, wash it and wear it again before you decide. Most often you will find that it soon feels like the ones you already own.

Frequently asked questions

Why do two identical items feel different

Colour, production batch and number of washes can all create small differences, even in the same model and size. This is normal and usually not a sign of a fault.

Does the colour affect the fabric

A little. Dark colours need more dyeing, which can make the fabric slightly firmer at first. The difference is most noticeable while the item is new.

Does the difference get smaller over time

Yes. After a few washes two identical items move closer together, because washing softens the fabric and evens out the small differences from dyeing and production.
