Why length shrinks more than width

Short answer: Knitted clothes often shrink most in length, because the stitches relax and draw together when the fabric is wet and warm. Length is where the fabric was stretched most during production, so that is also where it pulls back the most.

The fabric has a memory

During knitting and the treatment that follows, the fabric is pulled lengthwise. The yarn remembers some of that tension, and when it gets wet and warm it settles and moves towards its natural size. That is why a T-shirt can get shorter in the wash without becoming much narrower.

The stitches draw together

Each stitch is a small loop, and when it relaxes it becomes shorter and thicker. The rows move closer together, and the fabric gets shorter. Across the width the stitches already sit closer, so less happens there. That explains why clothes can change proportions in the wash.

What washing and heat do

Heat and movement in the washing drum make the fibres relax. The warmer it is and the more movement there is, the more the fabric can draw together. Wash at a low temperature according to the care label, and avoid a hard spin. It is a simple way of keeping clothes at their original size.

Drying decides a lot

The tumble dryer is often the biggest reason clothes get shorter. Hang the garment up or lay it flat, and avoid heat unless the label allows it. Lay it flat while it dries if you want to keep the change small. Some fabrics cope with gentle tumbling, but check the instructions first.

Choose the size with care

If you want to avoid a piece getting too short, choose a size that sits comfortably and wash it according to the instructions. Remember that clothes often change a little in the first wash. Take that into account with the length of tops, so they still cover as you wish. Look at the bamboo tops for women and compare the lengths.

Sweat and thick fabric

Thicker knits can also change in the wash, and a sweat can become slightly shorter in the body and sleeves. Always follow the instructions, and avoid high heat. You can look at the bamboo sweat for men and women and read how each piece is recommended to be washed.

How to stretch a little back

If a garment has become a little shorter, you can often give some back while it is damp. Lay it flat and gently pull it in length and into shape. This works best for small changes, and it cannot always restore the original size. Do it carefully so you do not pull the fabric crooked.

Check before you buy again

If you are unsure which size fits, wash one piece according to the instructions and measure it afterwards. You can also read about how other pieces sit among the bestsellers from Copenhagen Bamboo. Keep the care instructions from the label and use them every time. It is the most reliable advice if you want the garment to fit the same.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my T-shirt get shorter in the wash?

The stitches relax and draw together lengthwise when the fabric is wet and warm. Wash at a low temperature and dry flat to limit it.

Can I make the garment longer again?

Often a little. Lay it flat while it is damp and gently pull it lengthwise. It works best for small changes.

Should I avoid the tumble dryer?

It is the safest choice unless the label allows it. Hang the garment up or lay it flat, and it will keep its shape better.
