Why T-shirt necklines go slack

Short answer: The neckline stretches when the T-shirt is pulled over your head and when it is hung wet on a hanger. Heat in the wash and the tumble dryer also makes the rib at the neck go slack. A few changes to your habits help the neckline keep its shape much longer.

Over the head every day

Each time the neckline is pulled over your head, the rib stretches. After a hundred times it no longer springs fully back, and the neckline starts to ripple. This applies to all T-shirts, including those in bamboo sweat clothes. Take the T-shirt off by lifting it from the hem with both hands, rather than pulling the neck from behind.

A wet hanger is the worst habit

A wet T-shirt on a hanger is pulled down by its own weight, and the neck and shoulders carry it all. The water makes the fabric heavier, and the rib stretches as it dries. Dry it flat instead, or hang it over a rail from the middle. This goes for short sleeves and long sleeve bamboo T-shirts alike.

Heat makes the rib slack

The tumble dryer and hot washes make the elastic in the neck brittle, so it loses its spring. Once slack, it rarely recovers. Wash at 40 degrees or lower and let the T-shirt air dry. It keeps its shape longer, even for the most worn T-shirts among the most popular Copenhagen Bamboo styles.

A packed washing machine

An overfilled washing machine twists and pulls at clothes, and the neckline is one of the weakest points. Leave a little room in the drum and use a lower spin speed for T-shirts. Turn them inside out so the rib does not rub against other items. Small adjustments like these make a noticeable difference over time.

How to reshape it

When the T-shirt comes out of the machine, gently ease the neckline back into shape with your fingers while the fabric is wet. Lay it flat with the neck drawn in so it dries in the right shape. It takes half a minute but keeps the neckline neater. Avoid stretching it sideways, as that can widen it.

When it is simply wear

Sometimes a long neckline is not a fault but normal wear on a T-shirt that has been worn a lot. The neck takes the most strain, both when you take the T-shirt on and off and when you tug at it during the day. If the rest is still fine, it works well for wearing at home.

Storing it in the wardrobe

Folded in a drawer, the neckline keeps its shape better than on a hanger, as there is no weight on the shoulders. If you want to hang T-shirts, use a wide hanger and slide it in from the bottom rather than through the neck. That way the rib is not stretched every time you take one out.

What you can do from today

Take the T-shirt off from the hem, wash at 40 degrees or lower, dry it flat and fold it in the drawer. These are four small habits that together keep the neckline neat much longer. You do not have to change everything at once. Start with drying, as it often makes the biggest difference.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stretched neckline be fixed

Rarely completely. A wash at 40 degrees and drying flat while you ease the neckline into shape can draw it in a little again.

Does washing hot help

No. Heat makes it worse, because the elastic in the rib turns stiff and loses its spring. Stick to 40 degrees or lower.

Which neckline holds up best

A round neck with tight rib. Deep necklines have less fabric to hold the shape and therefore start to ripple sooner after many washes.
