Checklist before a party

Short answer: Check that your inner layer does not show through the fabric, that no seams show under anything close fitting, and that you can sit in it for hours. Three things that are easy to check at home and hard to fix once the party is under way.

The inner layer must not show

A light outer layer reveals a dark layer underneath. That goes for both the colour and the edges, which can show through thin fabric. Choose an inner layer close to your skin tone or to the colour of the outer layer. Under a white shirt, a dark T-shirt is almost always visible. See bamboo boxers.

Check in daylight

The light at home is often softer than at a party or in photos with a flash. Stand by a window or under a bright lamp and look in the mirror. Check from behind and from the side too, since that is where an inner layer or an edge often shows. What you see in daylight usually shows later too.

No visible seams

A seam showing through the fabric will be in every photo. Under close fitting fabric every edge shows, from underwear and from a T-shirt. Choose an inner layer with flat seams, or none where the outer layer sits close. Smooth the fabric with your hand and look for edges. See bamboo sweat for men and women.

Sit down and check

An item that fits standing up can pinch sitting down. A party is mostly sitting, at the table, on the sofa or on a bench. Sit for a few minutes in the outfit and pay attention at the waist, over the thighs and at the buttons. If it pinches after two minutes, it will pinch more after four hours. Check that you can move

Besides sitting, you might reach for something, give a hug or dance. Raise your arms, turn your upper body and take a few steps. If the shirt rides up or pulls across the back, it is better to know now. Clothes with a little give are easier to wear for a whole evening.

A layer for the way home

Evenings often turn cooler than expected, especially on the late trip home. Think about how you get there and back, and whether an extra layer should come along. A layer that suits the rest of the outfit can also go on indoors if the room turns cool. It does not need to take up much space.

Try it all on the day before

Put on the whole outfit the day before, not just the top. Then you find out whether a button is missing, whether something needs washing or ironing, or whether the inner layer does not work. The day before, there is time to fix it. An hour before the party, there is rarely time for more than getting dressed.

One last look

Just before you leave, take a last look in the mirror. Check for lint, hair or stains that are easy to miss. See that the collar sits right and the shirt is tucked in if it should be. It takes half a minute, and then you can forget about the clothes.

Frequently asked questions

What should you check before a party

That the inner layer does not show through, that there are no visible seams, and that the outfit also fits when you sit down. Ideally check the day before.

How do you avoid visible seams

Choose an inner layer with flat seams or no seams in that area. Under close fitting fabric every edge shows, so smooth the fabric and take a look.

Why sit down to check

Because an item that fits standing can pinch when sitting. A party is mostly spent sitting down, and whatever pinches will not get better.
