Checklist before summer

Short answer: Check that light pieces have not turned see-through, that you have enough thin layers, and that the clothes you wore last summer still fit after a full year.

Light pieces get thinner over time

Every wash takes a little of the fabric. You do not notice it from one time to the next, but a light fabric washed thirty times can be see-through without you realising. Hold your light T-shirts up to a window. If you can clearly see your hand, wear them at home or as a layer underneath.

Dark fabric hides wear for longer

Dark colours cover a thinner fabric for longer, but the wear is still there. Look for thin areas at the shoulders and under the arms, where the fabric works hardest. If a dark piece loses its colour in patches, it has been washed many times. See bamboo sweatshirts for men for cooler summer evenings.

Enough thin layers for warm days

In the heat you change more often. A T-shirt soaked by lunchtime gets swapped, and suddenly two pieces are used in one day. Count how many thin layers you actually wear. Seven to ten sets is not too many during a warm spell, and it keeps you calm when the laundry falls behind. See the range for men.

Drying time is shorter in summer

Clothes dry fast on a line in the sun, which can tempt you to manage with fewer pieces. But the machine still has to run, and that takes time. With more sets you can gather the laundry and run full loads instead of small half ones. It saves time and is gentler on the clothes.

Try last year's clothes before buying new

A year changes both the body and the clothes a little. Shorts that fitted last summer may feel tight at the waist, and a T-shirt may have stretched in length. Put the key pieces on before you buy anything. Then you know exactly what is missing. See bestsellers for men.

Check elastic and waistbands

Elastic in waistbands and leg openings loses its grip over time, and you feel it most in the heat, when fabric gets damp and heavier. Gently stretch the waistband. If it does not spring back quickly, it will slide down during the day. Slack elastic does not recover on its own.

Pack winter clothes away clean

When summer clothes come out, winter clothes need to go somewhere else. Wash them before packing and let them dry fully. Clothes stored with sweat or stains can smell or show marks when you take them out in autumn. Use a box or a bag that can breathe, and label it.

Make a short list of what is missing

Once everything is tried and counted, it is easy to note what is missing. Perhaps two light T-shirts and a pair of shorts. A short list helps you buy on purpose rather than at random. It also gives you a drawer where everything fits and actually gets worn all summer.

Frequently asked questions

What should you check before summer

That light pieces have not turned see-through, that you have enough thin layers, and that last year's clothes still fit.

Why do light pieces become see-through

Because the fabric gets thinner with every wash. On a light fabric it shows clearly, while a dark fabric hides it for longer.

How many thin sets do you need

More than in winter. In the heat you change more often, and seven to ten sets is not too many in a warm spell.
