Checklist when something has become too big

Short answer: Check whether it is the fabric or the size. A fabric that has stretched can often pull back in a warm wash, but a size that was too big will not get smaller.

The fabric or the size

When a piece of clothing feels too big, there are two possible explanations. Either the fabric has stretched through wear, or the size was too big from the start. It matters which, because only the first can be fixed. Think back to how it fitted when new. If it fitted well then, the fabric has changed.

Compare with a newer piece

If you have a similar, newer piece in the same size, lay the two on top of each other. If the old one is clearly longer or wider, it has stretched. If they match, the size simply does not suit you. It gives a clear answer in seconds and saves guessing.

Stretched fabric can pull back

A warm wash can give a stretched knit some of its shape back. Wash the piece at the highest temperature the label allows and let it dry flat. The fabric often pulls in a little, so it sits closer again. It works best on pieces that have only stretched a bit. See bamboo panties.

Stick to the label

It can be tempting to wash much hotter than stated to get more effect. But then the fabric may shrink unevenly or lose its softness. Stick to the highest temperature on the care label, and repeat the wash rather than going hotter if the first attempt is not enough.

A size that is too big will not get smaller

If the piece was too big from the start, no wash will help. A warm wash cannot change a size, only return some shape to a stretched fabric. Here it is better to pass it on to someone it fits. Check the size guide before buying next time. See bamboo sweatshirts for women.

Slack elastic cannot be fixed

A waistband that has lost its grip does not come back on its own. Worn elastic does not tighten again with washing or heat. The piece can still be worn at home, but it will slip during the day. A tailor can replace the elastic if the rest is fine. See bestsellers for women.

Why clothes stretch

Clothes stretch through wear and through weight. A fabric worn tight all day gives a little at a time. A piece hanging on a hanger is pulled long by its own weight, especially when wet. So fold knits rather than hanging them, and let wet clothes dry flat.

Check the fit now and then

Look over your most worn pieces a couple of times a year. A piece that is starting to get too big can often be saved with a warm wash if you catch it early. Wait until it hangs loose, and there is less to recover. A quick look keeps the drawer full of clothes that fit.
