Clothes that feel rough

Short answer: A soft fabric that suddenly feels rough has usually had too much detergent or been dried in harsh air. Both can be fixed with small changes to washing and drying. The softness usually comes back after one or two washes.

Too much detergent

Detergent residue settles on the fibres like a film. That film makes the fabric stiff and a little hard to the touch, especially after many washes in a row. Run an extra rinse and use less detergent next time. The dose on the pack is often meant for very dirty laundry, so everyday bamboo t-shirts for women need less.

Hard water makes it worse

If you live somewhere with hard water, minerals from the water stay in the fabric along with the detergent. That gives an extra stiff feel. An extra rinse helps, as does dosing for your water hardness, which is often shown on the pack. Less detergent also means less residue for the minerals to bind to.

Drying in sun and wind

Clothes that dry in a strong wind turn stiffer than clothes dried indoors. The wind dries the surface quickly, and the fibres set in the position they were in. So dry indoors or in the shade when it is very windy. This matters most for thin pieces like bamboo tops for women, where you feel the surface the most.

Shake clothes before and after

Shake each garment firmly before hanging it up. That loosens the fibres so they do not dry stuck together. When the clothes are dry, shake them again or rub the fabric gently between your hands. It softens it in seconds and is often enough to bring the soft feel back.

Fabric softener is not the answer

Fabric softener leaves a layer on the fibres and makes the fabric less breathable. It feels soft at first, but the layer builds up wash after wash and can end up making the fabric stiffer. That is especially unhelpful in clothes close to the body, like bamboo underwear for women, where the fabric needs to move moisture.

Reset with a clean rinse

If clothes have turned rough over a long time, you can give them a fresh start. Wash them on a normal programme with no detergent and no softener. That rinses out the old residue. Repeat once more if the fabric still feels stiff, and then go back to a smaller dose.

Use the dryer with care

A tumble dryer makes clothes soft, but the heat wears on the fibres over time. If you use one, pick a low temperature and take the clothes out while they are still slightly damp. Let them finish on a rack. That way you get the softness without drying the fabric out.

Wash at the right temperature

A higher temperature does not make clothes softer. In fact, washing too hot can make the fibres stiffer and wear them faster. Follow the care label, usually thirty or forty degrees. That is enough to get clothes clean and gentle enough to keep the soft surface.

Frequently asked questions

Why does soft clothing turn rough

Most often because of detergent residue in the fibres, or because it dried in a strong wind with no moisture in the air, so the fibres set as they were.

Does fabric softener help

Briefly, but it leaves a layer on the fibres that makes the fabric worse at moving moisture, and that layer builds up over many washes.

What do you do about rough clothes

Run an extra rinse without detergent, and dry the garment indoors or in the shade next time. Use less detergent from then on as well.
