Drying and cooking smells

Short answer: Fabric absorbs smells from the air, and damp clothes absorb far more than dry ones. If you dry laundry in the kitchen while cooking, it will smell of food afterwards, even though it has just been washed.

Moisture opens the fibres

Wet fabric has an open structure that binds odour molecules effectively. The fibres are swollen with water, and smells get in as moisture evaporates and new molecules settle. That is why men's bamboo joggers pick up smells while drying if they hang in the same room as the pans.

Grease in the air is the worst

Frying fumes contain tiny drops of fat that stick to fabric and do not leave with ordinary airing. The fat binds the smell and holds it for days. Getting it out takes a wash with an enzyme detergent, and that also affects bamboo underwear for men, which would otherwise need only a normal wash.

Food smells and frying fumes differ

Ordinary smells from boiling water, soup or coffee stay mostly in the air and can be aired away. Frying fumes from a pan are different, because they leave a thin film on everything nearby. The difference matters, since it decides whether fresh air is enough or the clothes need washing again.

The simple rule

Never dry clothes in the kitchen, and close the door to the drying room while cooking. With an open-plan kitchen, wait to hang the washing until the meal is done and the air has changed. Then all the most popular men's styles stay fresh without an extra wash.

Use the extractor properly

Switch the extractor on before you start frying and leave it running a while afterwards. It removes much of the grease and smell, but not all. Open a window while cooking as well. Laundry should still hang elsewhere, because even a little grease can settle in damp fabric.

Dry clothes are less exposed

Once dry, clothes absorb far less smell because the fibres close up. Damp items are the most exposed. So take clothes down and put them away as soon as they are dry, rather than leaving them hanging. That cuts the time they can pick up smells.

If the clothes already smell

Ordinary food smells can often be aired out by hanging clothes in fresh air for a few hours. If frying fumes are in them, that will not help. Wash them again with an enzyme detergent at the temperature the care label allows. The smell only goes once the grease has gone.

Plan washing around cooking

The simplest approach is to wash when nobody is cooking. Start a load in the morning so clothes dry during the day before dinner begins. That avoids the problem entirely, however your home is laid out, and the clothes smell only clean.

Frequently asked questions

Can the smell be aired out

Ordinary food smells yes, frying fumes no. Grease sticks in the fibres and needs another wash with an enzyme detergent to disappear fully.

How quickly do clothes pick up smells

Fifteen minutes in heavy frying fumes is enough for the smell to settle in damp fabric. That is why it is best to keep laundry out of the kitchen altogether.

Does the extractor help

Yes, but it does not remove everything. Laundry should still hang elsewhere, with the door to the drying room closed while cooking.
