Drying at a campsite

Short answer: Drying outdoors works well in summer, but dew at night can make clothes wet again. Take them in before sunset or hang them under cover. With a little planning you can keep your clothes clean and dry through a whole holiday at the campsite.

Dew comes after sunset

When the temperature drops in the evening, moisture in the air condenses on every cold surface, clothes included. An item that was dry at six can be damp again by midnight. The same goes for women's bamboo joggers left out overnight on a line between two trees.

Plan the wash around the day

Wash in the morning so the clothes have the whole day to dry. Late morning and early afternoon give the best mix of warmth and air. If you wash late in the day, clothes rarely dry fully before the dew arrives. Then they have to hang under cover overnight and finish the next day.

Wind beats sun

A light breeze dries faster than still heat and does not fade the colour. Direct sun for many hours can dull dark colours over time. Hang clothes in partial shade where the wind can reach them. That protects dark items like socks for women, which can otherwise turn lighter.

Roll the water out first

At a campsite you rarely have a machine with a good spin. So do not wring clothes hard; lay them in a towel, roll it up tightly and press. That removes a lot of water and shortens drying time. It also spares the fabric, which could otherwise be pulled out of shape.

Under cover is safest

A line under an awning or in a tent porch gives both air and shelter. The clothes are protected from dew and a sudden shower, and the wind can still reach them. It works for a bamboo slip too, which is thin and dries fast when air can pass through.

Hang with space

Clothes hung close together dry slowly because the air cannot get round them. Use pegs so items do not slide together on the line. Hang tops from the bottom hem and trousers from the waistband. The wind can then lift the fabric slightly, and front and back dry at the same time.

Take care in strong wind

A strong wind dries fast but can also pull clothes down. Use two pegs on each item and keep an eye on light things like underwear and socks. Hang them low and in the shelter of the tent or car so they do not blow across the site.

Bring clothes in on time

Feel the seams in the late afternoon. If the clothes are dry, take them in and put them in a bag that keeps moisture out. If they are still damp, move them under cover before the sun goes down. That way you do not have to start over the next morning.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take outdoors

Two to four hours in sun and wind, longer in still weather. Thick items may need most of a day.

Can you dry clothes in a car

Yes, with the windows slightly open, but it takes longer. Park in the sun if you can, so the warmth inside the car helps.

What do you do when it rains

Roll the water out in a towel and hang the clothes under cover with air around them. An awning or tent porch is the best spot in the rain.
