When clothes are dry enough to put away

Short answer: Clothes are dry enough when seams and waistbands feel dry, not just the open surface. If you put damp clothes away, the smell spreads through the whole pile. A quick check with your hand before folding saves you washing everything again.

The seams are the test

A seam has more fabric and more thread, so it is always the last part to dry. The open surface can feel dry for hours before the seam catches up. Feel the side seam of men's bamboo joggers before you fold them and put them in the cupboard.

Check the thick spots

Besides the seams, other places hold on to moisture. Waistbands, ribbing, pockets and hoods have several layers of fabric on top of each other. Turn the pockets out and feel the inside. This is where moisture often hides when the rest of the garment feels done.

Try the back of your hand

The back of your hand is more sensitive to cold than your fingertips, and damp fabric feels cool. Rest the back of your hand on the fabric for a few seconds. If it feels cool, there is still moisture. Use it on the ribbing of socks for men, where the elastic holds water longest.

Why damp clothes smell

Damp clothes in a closed pile get no air, and the moisture cannot escape. That gives bacteria time and calm to grow. The smell spreads from one damp item to the rest of the pile. A single damp t-shirt can end up giving many garments a musty smell.

Better an hour too many

An extra hour on the rack costs nothing, while a musty pile costs another wash. If in doubt, let the clothes hang a little longer. That goes for a bamboo tank top for men too, which looks dry long before its seams are.

Fold at room temperature

Clothes coming from a warm spot like a radiator can feel dry simply because they are warm. Let them cool for a moment before you check. You will then notice more clearly if any moisture is left. It takes only a few minutes and gives a safer result.

Give the cupboard some air

Even dry clothes do better in a cupboard with a little air. Do not pack the shelves tight, and leave the door open for a moment now and then. If the cupboard stands against a cold outer wall, moisture can gather behind it. A small gap between cupboard and wall helps the air move.

A simple routine

Feel seams, waistbands and pockets before you fold. Use the back of your hand if unsure. Leave doubtful items for another hour. That small bit of extra attention keeps everything in the cupboard fresh when you need it, and means nothing has to be washed again.

Frequently asked questions

How long after the surface is dry

One to two hours for seams and waistbands. Thick items like hoodies and joggers may need a little longer.

Can you feel moisture in a folded item

Yes, unfold it and feel the inside of the fold. Moisture often collects there because the fabric lies double and gets no air.

What do you do if the pile smells

Wash again at forty degrees and dry thoroughly with air around it. Check the cupboard too, so the smell does not linger on the shelves.
