Fabric finishing, what it does

Short answer: After dyeing, fabric is treated so it becomes smooth, stable and easy to sew. Much of this treatment rinses out in the first few washes, and after that it is the fibre and the knit itself you feel.

Why fabric is finished after dyeing

Freshly dyed fabric is uneven and hard to handle in production. It can twist, curl at the edges and slip under the sewing machine. Finishing agents are added to smooth and stabilise the surface. This makes it possible to cut pieces precisely and sew straight seams, even in small, dense items like socks for men.

What the finish does in production

At the factory, fabric has to lie still in many layers while it is cut, and it has to run evenly through the machines. A smooth surface reduces friction and keeps the layers from shifting. Without it, measurements would vary more from piece to piece. The finish is mainly a tool for the people sewing, not something you benefit from.

Why new clothes feel stiff

Some of the finish is still on the surface when you buy the garment, and you feel it as stiffness or a slightly dry touch. The fabric also seems less supple than it really is. After two or three washes most of it is gone, and the fibres can move freely. You notice this clearly in bamboo boxers, which soften after the first washes.

What stays permanently

Not everything disappears. Shrink treatment and colour fixing stay, because they keep the garment in shape and the colour in place through many washes. Smoothing agents and other helpers that were only useful in production rinse out. The same goes for bamboo joggers for men, where you can feel the difference between the first and fourth wash.

How to wash new clothes the first time

Wash new clothes before you wear them, and ideally on their own the first time. Thirty or forty degrees is usually enough, with a normal, mild dose of detergent. You do not need fabric softener, because it is the factory residue you want to remove. Always check the care label before you choose a programme.

Why the feel changes over time

Once the finish is gone, the fibres straighten out in the water and settle more naturally in the knit. The surface becomes more even and the fabric drapes more softly. This happens gradually over the first washes, not all at once. It is worth giving a new garment a few washes before you judge how it feels in the long run.

What you can do day to day

Dry clothes on a hanger or rack rather than in the tumble dryer, so the fibres are not worn unnecessarily. Avoid too much detergent, since soap residue can also feel stiff. Turn garments inside out when washing. Small habits like these help the fabric keep its softness after the finish has rinsed out.

When to pay attention

If a garment still feels stiff or smells of chemicals after several washes, the cause is often too much detergent or hard water rather than the fabric. Try an extra rinse and a smaller dose. If you have sensitive skin or react to new clothes, always wash before wearing and talk to your doctor if the discomfort continues.

Frequently asked questions

Is fabric finishing harmful

No, but always wash new clothes before wearing them, so the production residue rinses out and the fabric feels right against your skin from day one.

Why does fabric get softer after a few washes

Because the finish washes away and the fibres straighten out in the water. The surface becomes more even and the knit can move more freely.

Can you avoid finished fabric

Rarely. Almost all industrially made fabric is treated in some way so it can be cut and sewn precisely. The most important thing is to wash the garment before use.
