Myth, hot washing is always most effective

Short answer: Modern detergents work from thirty degrees. For ordinary everyday dirt, a higher temperature adds no extra cleanness, only more wear on your clothes and higher electricity use.

Where the myth comes from

Detergents used to be less effective, and hot water was the safest way to get clothes clean. That is why many people learned that sixty degrees and boil washes were the normal choice. The habit stuck even though detergents changed. Today temperature alone rarely decides the result, but the mix of detergent, water and movement in the drum.

Enzymes work at low temperatures

Modern detergents contain enzymes designed to work at thirty to forty degrees. They break down sweat, skin oil and food residue while the clothes move in the drum. For everyday items like T-shirts, socks and underwear, forty degrees is therefore enough to get them clean, see bamboo underwear for men.

Heat wears out fibres and elastic

Above sixty degrees the elastic weakens permanently and the fabric shrinks. You notice it first in waistbands, ribbed edges and cuffs, which lose their spring and start to ripple. At the same time the surface takes more friction in the drum and looks worn sooner. This also applies to long sleeve styles, see long sleeve models.

More power without more cleanness

Most of the electricity a washing machine uses goes into heating the water. The higher the temperature, the more energy each wash needs. If the clothes do not get any cleaner, that is power used for nothing. Turning everyday washes down to forty or thirty degrees is a simple change that helps both your clothes and your bill.

How to get clothes clean at low temperatures

Dose the detergent according to how dirty the load is and how hard the water is where you live. Do not fill the drum completely, because the clothes need room to move, otherwise they are not rinsed properly. Turn items inside out so sweat and skin oil on the inside meet the water and detergent directly.

Stains need pretreatment, not heat

A grease or food stain rarely disappears just because the water is hot. Some stains even set more firmly in hot water. It works better to treat the stain before the item goes into the machine, for example with a little detergent straight on the fabric. Let it work for a while, then wash at the usual temperature.

When a hot wash makes sense

There are situations where sixty degrees is the right choice. When someone in the house is ill, it can be sensible to wash bedding, towels and clothes worn close to the body hotter. The same goes for very dirty workwear. Always check the care label first. For everyday socks it is rarely needed, see socks for men.

Read the care label

The care label tells you the highest temperature the fabric can take. It is an upper limit, not a recommendation. If it says forty degrees, you can easily wash lightly worn clothes at thirty. Soft everyday clothing keeps its shape and feel longest when it is washed cool and left to dry calmly on a hanger or drying rack.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need to wash hot to get clothes clean

No. Modern detergents work from thirty degrees, and ordinary everyday dirt comes out at forty, as long as the drum is not overfilled and the dose is right.

When is a hot wash still the right choice

When someone in the household is ill and for very dirty workwear. Then sixty degrees can be right, if the care label allows it.

What does a hot wash cost

Both power and lifespan. The elastic weakens permanently and the fabric shrinks more than it otherwise would, so the garment loses its shape and needs replacing sooner.
