Odour compared

Short answer: Wool smells least after several days of wear, followed by cellulose fibres such as bamboo viscose and cotton. Synthetic fabrics smell fastest and often hold on to the odour even after washing. How you wash, though, matters at least as much as the fibre.
Why synthetics smell most
When you sweat, your skin releases both moisture and oils. Bacteria and oils bind to the synthetic fibre surface and do not rinse out fully in the wash. That is why a polyester top can start to smell again soon after you put it on. To avoid that, see the alternatives in the most popular men's styles.
The smell that stays
Many people know the feeling: a freshly washed top that starts to smell as soon as it warms up. It comes from residue that has built up in the fibres over many washes. The smell is not gone, only muted until body heat wakes it again. It happens most with synthetics but can happen with any fibre.
Why cellulose does better
Cellulose fibres take moisture into the fibre itself instead of leaving it on the surface. In the wash they release both the moisture and the odour more easily. That makes them easier to get clean than synthetics. It is one reason to choose bamboo underwear for men for long days.
Drier skin, less odour
Odour forms when moisture and bacteria have time together on the skin. A fabric that moves moisture away and keeps the skin drier gives bacteria poorer conditions. That does not mean the fabric kills bacteria, but you can notice the difference over a long day, especially in underwear and socks.
What you control
Daily changes and washing at 40 degrees with a full dose of detergent matter more than the fibre alone. Many people use too little to be kind to their clothes, but then residue stays behind. Use the amount on the pack for your load and your water. This applies to everything in all men's clothing.
Skip the fabric softener
Fabric softener leaves a thin film on the fibres, and that film can trap odour. In this way softener can actually make smell problems worse. Choose an extra rinse instead, so detergent residue and dirt come out fully. Bamboo clothing is soft on its own and does not need softener to feel good.
Air clothes between wears
If you want to wear a piece more than one day, hang it up to air instead of dropping it on a pile. Moisture that can evaporate means less odour. This applies especially to tops and sweatshirts. Underwear and socks, however, should be changed every day, whatever fabric they are made from.
Store clothes dry
Never put clothes in the wardrobe before they are completely dry. Even a little moisture in a closed wardrobe can cause a musty smell that settles in the fabric. Check seams and waistbands, where moisture lingers longest. Air the wardrobe now and then too, so your clothes stay fresh between wears.
Frequently asked questions
Is bamboo antibacterial
The effect comes mainly from the fabric keeping the skin drier. That does not mean it kills bacteria, but drier skin usually smells less over the day.
Why do clothes smell after washing
Because residue stays in the fibres. An extra rinse and no softener help, along with a full dose of detergent so the dirt comes out completely.
Does washing hotter help
A little, but it wears the fabric. Try a full dose at 40 degrees first, and add an extra rinse before you turn up the temperature.
