Repairs while travelling with minimal kit

Short answer: A small kit with two needles, black and white thread and a safety pin takes up less space than a matchbox. It solves most mishaps on a trip. With the kit in your toiletry bag, you can fix a seam or a lost drawstring in the hotel room instead of hunting for a shop.

The three common mishaps

A seam that splits, a button that falls off and a drawstring that disappears into its channel. That goes for everything from socks for women to outer layers. These happen more often when travelling, because clothes are packed, pulled and worn more than at home. All three only need simple tools and a few minutes.

The safety pin does the most

It can thread a drawstring back, hold a tear closed and stand in for a button. It also helps with a bamboo jogging suit on the way. Pin it on the inside so it is hidden and cannot open against your skin. Bring two or three in different sizes, as they take up almost no room.

How to thread a drawstring back

Attach the safety pin to the end of the drawstring and close it. Push the pin into the channel at the opening and work it along with your fingers, easing the fabric back behind it. Hold the other end of the string so it does not vanish too. Tie a loose knot in both ends afterwards.

A quick seam in the hotel room

Turn the garment inside out and sew with small stitches along the old seam. Backstitch holds best in knits because it can stretch. Secure the thread with three stitches on top of each other at both ends. It is an emergency repair, but done properly it often lasts the rest of the trip and many washes after.

Buy the ready-made kit

Hotels often have a free kit, and otherwise it costs very little at an airport. It also covers bamboo underwear for women if something goes wrong. A ready-made travel kit usually has more thread colours than you need. Take it home and keep it in your suitcase, so it is ready for the next trip.

Pack the kit properly

Keep the kit in your toiletry bag or an inside pocket of the suitcase, so you always know where it is. Push the needles into a piece of card or a small cushion so they do not pierce anything. A small box with a lid keeps it all together. Check the contents before each trip and top up what you used.

When there is no needle and thread

If you forgot the kit, you can still manage a lot. A safety pin can hold a tear closed, and a loose button can go in your wallet until you are home. Tape on the inside can hold a dropped hem in place for a day. These fixes will not last, but they save the day.

Repair it properly at home

An emergency fix is made with whatever you had, and it is rarely as strong as a proper one. Check it when you unpack and redo it if the stitches are large or the thread is wrong. Remove safety pins before washing. That way your clothes last for many more trips.

Frequently asked questions

What should be in it at a minimum

Two needles, two thread colours, small scissors and two safety pins. With that you can handle a seam, a button and a lost drawstring.

Can you bring scissors in hand luggage

Small nail scissors are usually allowed, but the rules vary. Check with the airport or airline before you travel.

How long does an emergency repair take

Five to ten minutes for a seam. Threading a drawstring back through its channel often takes only a couple of minutes with a safety pin.
