Sensitive skin on the neck and shoulders

Short answer: The neck and shoulders are where the skin is thin and clothing rests firmly all day. The neckline, the label at the back and the shoulder seam are the three places that most often cause discomfort, and you can do something about all three without replacing your whole wardrobe.

The neckline

A stiff or tight neckline rests directly on thin skin and rubs with every movement of your head. A soft rib edge in the right width sits calmly and follows the neck without pressing. When trying a top, check that the edge lies flat all the way round. See the styles in bamboo T-shirts for women.

Round neck or v-neck

The shape of the neckline decides where the edge sits. A close round neck sits high and tight against the skin, while a v-neck or a slightly wider round neck gives more air. If you tend to get redness or itching at the neck, a more open neckline may be worth trying. It is a small change you feel all day.

The label at the neck

A stiff label is the most common single cause of itching at the back of the neck. It has sharp edges and sits exactly where the skin moves most against the fabric. Cut it off close to the seam with small scissors, taking care not to cut the fabric. This applies to many pieces in our women's clothing.

The shoulder seam

A thick seam on top of the shoulder is felt most when you carry a bag or backpack. The bag presses the seam into the skin, and then it rubs with every step. Choose a style with a flat seam. The same goes for underwear with straps, for example in bamboo underwear for women.

Straps and pressure

Straps on underwear or tops rest on the same small area all day. If they are too narrow or too tight, they can leave marks and irritate the skin. Adjust them so they stay in place without cutting in. If a strap leaves a red mark after half an hour, it is too tight or the size is wrong.

Dry skin in winter

In winter the skin is drier, because the air both outdoors and indoors is dry. Dry skin is more sensitive to friction, which is why the neckline is often felt more in the cold months. A scarf or a high collar can rub more than expected. Choose a soft material closest to the skin.

Washing and softness

A few washes without fabric softener can make a new neckline softer, as the fabric relaxes and any residue is rinsed out. Use a neutral detergent without perfume so no fragrance rests against the thin skin. If the neckline is too tight, however, washing will not help, and the size or style needs to change.

When the discomfort continues

If the skin on your neck or shoulders keeps itching or turning red even after changing detergent and removing the label, the cause may be something else. Jewellery, perfume on the neck and hair products can also cause discomfort in the same area. For persistent or strong discomfort, talk to your doctor.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the neckline bother me most in winter

Because the skin is drier in winter and therefore more sensitive to friction. At the same time you wear more layers, which press the edge closer to the skin.

Can you make a neckline softer

A few washes without fabric softener help, as the fabric relaxes. If the edge is too tight, it will not help, and a different size or style is the better option.

Does a scarf help

Some people use a soft scarf as a layer between skin and edge, and it can ease things. But it does not solve the cause, which is often the edge itself, the label or the wash.
