Storing socks without losing pairs

Short answer: Pair your socks as soon as they come out of the wash. If you only have one type of sock in one colour, you can skip pairing altogether and simply take two.

Pair them straight after washing

If pairing is put off, one sock ends up in another pile. The machine rarely eats socks. It is the heap of loose socks that is left lying, gets mixed with other laundry and spreads around the home. Take them off the drying rack first and pair them before folding anything else. See bamboo socks for women.

Check the drum and the door seal

One sock often stays behind in the machine. It can stick to the drum, hide in the rubber seal by the door or travel inside a sheet or duvet cover. Look and feel each time you empty the machine. Shake out larger items before hanging them too, so no sock hides in a sleeve.

One colour removes the problem

If all your socks are the same, there are no wrong pairs. You just take two from the drawer, and a single lost sock does not matter, because all the others match the one left over. It saves time every week and keeps the drawer calm. See bamboo slips.

Use a net in the machine

A laundry net keeps the pair together through washing and drying. Put worn socks straight into the net when you take them off, and close it once it is full. They come out together and pairing takes a moment. The net also keeps thin socks from tangling with other laundry. See bamboo T-shirts for women.

Fold them loosely

Lay the two socks on top of each other and fold them once in the middle. Avoid rolling them into a tight ball where the edge of one sock is pulled over the other. That stretches the cuff for no reason. A loose fold keeps the pair together in the drawer without wearing the fabric.

Stand them on end in the drawer

Folded socks standing in rows are easy to see at a glance. You see every pair at once and do not have to dig through a pile. Small dividers or a box in the drawer keep the rows in place. It also makes it easy to notice when only a few are left.

Keep a basket for singles

When a sock is still missing its partner, put it in a small basket of its own. The other one usually turns up in the next wash or at the bottom of a bag. Check the basket once a month. If a sock has been alone for months, its partner is probably gone for good.

Clear out worn pairs

Thin heels and holes at the toe make a pair less comfortable. Take it out of the drawer when you notice, rather than putting it back. That way the drawer only holds socks you actually want to wear, and you do not have to sort them out every morning.

Frequently asked questions

How do you avoid losing socks

Pair them straight after washing, or wash them in a net so they stay together all the way through. Check the drum and door seal as well.

Why does one sock disappear

Because it stays in the machine or ends up in another pile. It rarely vanishes completely and often turns up again in the next wash.

Is it a good idea to own only one kind

Yes, if you want to save time. If all your socks are the same, there are no wrong pairs, and a single lost sock does not matter.
