What static attraction does to lint

Short answer: An electrically charged fabric attracts small particles such as lint and hair, just as a balloon attracts scraps of paper. The charge holds the lint in place until it is released, which is why shaking the garment rarely helps.

Charge attracts light things

Lint weighs almost nothing, and even a very weak electrical force is enough to hold it on the fabric. When clothes rub against other clothes, a chair or the drum of a machine, charge moves, and the surface becomes a small magnet for anything light. You see it most clearly on a bamboo hoodie for men after the dryer.

Dry air makes it worse

Without moisture in the air, the charge cannot leak away on its own, and the fabric keeps collecting lint all day. In winter, indoor air is often very dry because of heating, so you notice both crackling and hair that clings. The same goes for bamboo undershirts for men, which sit close and rub against the layers on top.

Why the charge stays put

Fabric conducts electricity poorly, so the charge does not spread out or disappear quickly. It stays where the rubbing happened, usually on sleeves, back and knees. That is why lint often gathers in certain areas rather than evenly across the garment. Once the charge is released, much of the lint falls off by itself.

Where the lint comes from

Lint is tiny fibres that have come loose from towels, bedding, blankets and other clothes. It floats in the air and settles on the floor, and a charged surface pulls it in from a short distance. So you can get lint on clothes without washing them with anything fluffy, simply by sitting on a sofa.

How to get rid of it

Dry clothes on a line instead of in a dryer, so less charge builds up in the first place. Dampen your hands lightly and stroke them down the fabric, giving the charge a way out so the lint lets go. A slightly damp cloth works the same way. After that, socks for men and the rest stay clean longer.

Humidity at home helps too

If indoor air is very dry, it can help to air rooms briefly and often, dry laundry indoors or place a bowl of water near the radiator. A little more moisture lets the charge leak away faster. You notice it as less crackling when you pull a top over your head and fewer hairs clinging to the fabric.

Wash with similar clothes

Clothes washed and dried together swap both lint and charge. Wash towels and terry separately, and keep smooth tops and underwear in another load. That leaves less loose material in the drum to settle on your clothes. Turning garments inside out before washing also protects the outer surface a little more.

When to step in

A little lint is normal and often disappears once clothes have hung for a while in more humid air. If the same garment collects lint every day, drying or indoor air is creating a lot of charge. Change one thing at a time so you can see what helps most in your home.

Frequently asked questions

Why do some fabrics collect more lint

Because synthetic fibres charge up faster and do not release the charge, so they hold on to lint longer than natural and semi natural fibres.

Does a lint roller help

Yes, it removes the lint right away, but the charge also needs to go, or the lint returns before long.

Does vinegar in the rinse work

A little, because it reduces static in the fabric. Use a small amount and combine it with line drying for the best result.
