How many sets of training clothes you need

Short answer: Work it out from how often you train and how often you wash. If you train four times a week and wash twice, you need five sets, with socks and underwear in double numbers.

One set per session

Workout clothes cannot be worn twice, however short the session was. Sweat settles in the fabric even after a short workout, and the smell comes quickly in a closed bag. So count how many sessions fall between two wash days. That number is your starting point. See bamboo sweatshirts for men.

Plus one as a buffer

An extra set covers the week the laundry gets pushed back. There is always a week when the machine is busy or the clothes do not dry in time. With a set in reserve you never have to skip a session. See socks for men and women.

Socks and underwear in double numbers

Those two are also worn every day and wear out fastest. They are also what you often change twice on a training day, once before and once after. So count on twice as many pairs as sets. See bamboo boxers.

How to work it out

Take the number of sessions per week and divide by the number of wash days. Round up and add one set as a buffer. Train three times and wash once, and you need four sets. Train four times and wash twice, and it comes to five once you count the buffer and drying time.

Drying time counts

A set that has just been washed is not ready until it is dry. If clothes hang for a day to dry, you need one more set for that day. Thin clothes dry faster than thick ones, which may mean you can manage with fewer sets.

Tops and outer layers

A soft layer for before and after training can often be worn several times if it was not on during the session itself. So you need fewer of those than T-shirts and socks. Two is usually enough, so one is always clean while the other is in the wash.

Spread the wear

With more sets, each one is worn less often and lasts longer. Rotate them instead of always taking the one on top of the drawer. That way they wear evenly, and you notice when a whole set is worn.

Washing that lasts

Wash workout clothes at a moderate temperature with a mild detergent and let them air dry. Skip fabric softener, as it can build up in the fabric. Turn socks inside out so sweat and dust come out.

Frequently asked questions

How many sets of workout clothes do you need

One per session between two wash days plus one as a buffer. With four sessions a week and two wash days, that is five sets.

Can you wear the same set twice

No. Workout clothes are saturated after one use, and in a closed bag the smell comes within a day.

How many pairs of socks

Twice as many as sets. Socks are also worn every day, wear out faster than the rest, and many people change them before and after training.
