Repairing the toe of a sock

Short answer: A thin or holed toe can be darned with a net of stitches that replaces the worn fabric. It takes about twenty minutes and gives the sock many more months before it needs replacing.
Build a net instead of sewing shut
Sew the hole shut and you get a hard ridge under your toes. Instead, first lay threads lengthwise across the hole, then weave threads crosswise between them. That gives a surface rather than a seam. The method works on bamboo socks for men and women and other worn knits.
What you need
You need a darning needle with a large eye, darning yarn or thin yarn close to the sock's colour and small scissors. A darning needle has a rounded tip that does not split the yarn. The thread can be a little thicker than sewing thread, so the net fills the hole without becoming stiff.
Use something round inside
A darning mushroom or a light bulb keeps the sock in shape while you sew. Without it the toe ends up too tight and presses when worn. Stretch the fabric lightly over the round shape, but no more than on the foot. The same goes for a tight edge on a bamboo slip.
Start in the whole fabric
Begin the net a few millimetres outside the hole, in fabric that is still intact. Worn fabric around a hole is often thin, and going into the stronger fabric gives the net a better hold. The repair lasts longer, and no new hole forms right at the edge.
Keep the stitches small
Large stitches are felt against the toes and wear through faster. Lay the threads close so there are no big gaps in the net. Do not pull too hard, as the net should lie flat and give like the rest of the sock. The same rule applies to any repair on clothes from the most popular for women.
Darn thin spots before they become holes
It is easier to reinforce a thin toe than to darn a hole. Hold the sock up to the light and look for places where the fabric has turned see through. A few rows of stitches across the thin area can stop a hole forming. It takes a few minutes and adds life to the sock.
Why toes wear first
Toes rub against the front of the shoe with every step, and long nails can wear the fabric from inside. Shoes that are too short add to the wear. Trim your nails regularly and check there is room at the front of your shoes. It saves many repairs and makes socks more comfortable.
Wash the darned sock gently
Wash the sock inside out on a gentle cycle, so the net is not pulled out of shape. Let it dry flat or on a line. Avoid the tumble dryer the first few times. Check the repair after a few washes and add a few stitches if a small gap has opened in the net.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a darned toe last
Three to six months with daily wear. It depends on how dense the net is and how much the sock is worn in the shoe.
Can you feel the repair
A little in the first days, then it adapts to the foot. A flat net with small stitches is felt the least.
Is it worth the effort
On good socks yes, on cheap ones rarely. If the sock has several thin spots, replacing it is often the better choice.
