Repairs after a laundry accident

Short answer: Most laundry damage is shrinkage, colour transfer or lost elasticity. Shrinkage and colour transfer can often be partly fixed, lost elasticity cannot. The key is to act quickly and know which of the three you are dealing with.

Work out what kind of damage it is

Look at the garment in daylight and compare it with a similar one that was not in the same wash. If it is shorter or narrower, it has shrunk. If it has a tint of another colour, dye has transferred. If the waistband is wavy and slack, the elastic has gone. Each problem needs its own fix, so start there.

Shrinkage can be stretched out

Dampen the garment, lay it flat and gently stretch it back to its original size. This works on bamboo socks and on sweaters. Pull a little at a time in both length and width, and let it dry in the new shape. A towel underneath soaks up extra water and keeps the shape steady while it dries.

Use lukewarm water and some time

Shrinkage sits in the fibres, and they give most easily when damp and lukewarm. Soak the garment for ten minutes in lukewarm water, press the water out without wringing, then start stretching. Repeat the next day if the measurements are not quite there. Hot air or a tumble dryer will pull it back in.

Colour transfer can be washed out

If the dye has only just transferred, a new wash with an enzyme detergent can remove most of it. Do not dry the garment in between, and that includes a bamboo hoodie for men. While it is wet, the stray dye sits loosely in the fibres. Wash at the same temperature and check before drying.

Repeat rather than raise the heat

If there is still colour after the first round, wash again at the same temperature. A higher temperature can set the dye more firmly and damage the elastic at the same time. Bleach is no answer on coloured clothes either, since it removes both the stray and the original colour. Patience gives the best result here.

Lost elasticity is gone

If the waistband is wavy after a hot wash, the elastane has broken down and will not come back. Heat snaps the thin elastic threads, and no wash or stretching can join them again. The garment can still be worn at home but will not fit as before. Look for a replacement among long sleeve styles.

What to do about a slack edge

A waistband with a channel can take new elastic threaded through, which takes about half an hour. If the elastane is knitted into the fabric itself, that is not possible. A tailor can sometimes sew on a new band, but it is rarely worth it on an everyday piece. Think about how much you wear it first.

Prevent the next mishap

Most laundry damage can be avoided with three simple habits. Wash at thirty degrees, sort by colour and skip the tumble dryer. Wash new clothes separately the first few times so any excess dye does not reach anything else. Close zips and turn garments inside out so they rub less against each other.

Frequently asked questions

How much shrinkage can be stretched out

Two to four percent, which covers most of a single hot wash. If the garment has shrunk more, you can often win some back, but rarely all of it.

How quickly should you act on colour transfer

Straight away. Once the garment has dried, the colour is set and much harder to remove, whatever product you use.

Can laundry damage be prevented

Yes, thirty degrees, sorting by colour and no tumble dryer cover most of it. Read the care label before washing a new garment for the first time.
