Why dark colours need more dye

Short answer: A dark colour has to absorb almost all light, and that takes many times more dye than a light shade. That is why dark items bleed more at first, and why fading shows more clearly on black.

Colour is about light

We see colour because fabric reflects some light and absorbs the rest. A light colour reflects a lot, while a dark colour absorbs almost everything. To absorb that much light, the fibre must hold a large amount of dye. That is the basic reason dark colours are harder to make than light ones.

The amount of dye rises steeply

Going from light grey to black takes around ten times as much dye. The amount does not rise evenly; it gets steeper the darker the colour. That is why black in our women's bamboo tops costs more to produce than a light shade, even though the cut is the same.

More dye means more excess

The more dye used, the more is left loose after rinsing. Fibres can only bind a certain amount, and the rest has to be rinsed out. Some stays on the surface anyway. This especially affects bamboo socks for women in dark tones, which may bleed a little at first.

Why dark fades more visibly

When a small part of the dye leaves black, it shows as a greyish tone. On a light colour the same loss is barely noticeable. The loss may be equal, but the eye sees it far more clearly on dark shades. The same goes for dark bamboo underwear for women, where you notice the change over time more easily.

How to wash new black

Wash new dark items alone for the first two to three washes at thirty degrees. That lets loose dye rinse out without reaching the rest of the load. Use a mild detergent and do not overfill the machine, so the water can rinse properly. After those first washes, the clothes can go in with other dark items.

Turn clothes inside out

Much of the visible wear on dark colours happens at the surface, as fabric rubs against other clothes and the drum. Turning garments inside out before washing protects the face. That keeps the colour deeper for longer. It is a small habit that makes a clear difference to black and other dark shades.

Watch out for sun and heat

Strong sunlight can bleach dark colours over time, especially if clothes dry outside in direct sun. Dry dark clothing in the shade or indoors. High heat in the dryer can also wear on colour and fibres. A low temperature and air drying are the gentlest choice if you want colour to stay dark.

What to expect

Even with good care, dark colours change slightly over time. That is a natural result of wear and washing. With separate washing at first, a low temperature and garments turned inside out, the colour can stay deep for a long time. Small habits give a calm, even look that lasts many seasons.

Frequently asked questions

Does black fade faster than light colours

The loss is the same, but it shows more on black. Even a small change gives a greyish tone that the eye picks up easily.

How many washes will new black bleed

Two to three, if washed alone at thirty degrees. After that, most of the loose dye has rinsed out.

Can bleeding be avoided completely

No, but washing separately the first few times solves the problem. The excess then never reaches your other clothes.
