What a production run is

Short answer: A production run is a batch of garments made from the same fabric in the same period at the same factory. Garments from the same run look most alike. That is useful to know when you buy several of the same item or want to add to something you own.

What a run has in common

Fabric roll, dye bath, machine and settings stay the same through the run, so sizes and shade are consistent. You see it most clearly when you compare two pairs of bamboo socks from the same pack. They are knitted on the same machine from the same yarn and dyed in the same bath.

How a run comes about

A run starts when a set quantity of a style is ordered. The factory buys or makes the fabric, dyes it and sews the garments in one continuous process. When the quantity is done, the run ends. The next time the style is made, a new run begins with new fabric and a new dye bath.

Why two runs differ

A new dye bath gives a slightly different shade, and a new fabric roll may weigh a little differently. The differences are small but visible when two garments lie side by side. It shows most on dark items like bamboo panties, where black or navy can look slightly warmer or cooler from run to run.

Sizes can vary a little too

Beyond colour, sizes can differ slightly between runs. Knit behaves differently depending on fabric tension, and seams can land a touch differently. The variations stay within set tolerances and are rarely noticeable. But two garments in the same size from different runs may feel a little different.

How to use this

If you buy several of the same item, do it at the same time so they come from the same run. That matters most for sets like bamboo sweat clothes, where top and bottom are worn together and should share the same shade. Buy one now and the other later, and they may come from different runs.

When you want to add to what you have

If you buy more of a garment you already own, the new one may come from another run. That is quite normal, and most of the time you will see no difference. If the colour must match exactly, lay them side by side in daylight when the new one arrives.

Washing changes the shade too

A garment you have washed many times often has a slightly different shade from a new one, even from the same run. Colour fades a little over time, especially with hot washes and sunlight. So a difference may come from wear as much as from the run. Wash cold and dry in the shade.

The run is a trail

Because each run is recorded, the maker can trace a garment back to it if a problem comes up. That is rarely needed, but it shows whether a fault affects a single item or the whole run. For you as a customer it mainly means there is a clear record of where the garment came from.

Frequently asked questions

How big is a run

From a few hundred to several thousand pieces, depending on the garment, how popular the style is and how much fabric was ordered.

Can you see which run a garment is from

Rarely on the label, but the maker can trace it through a batch number, usually found on the packaging or in the maker's system.

Does a new run mean lower quality

No, only that small details like shade and size may differ slightly, within the tolerances the maker works with.
