The solid dark grey is the quiet version of the dark basics in the wardrobe: smooth and even in tone, without the flecked texture of the melange, and therefore a notch more formal. It is the top that can go under a blazer without looking sporty, and that is still completely at home with jeans. Solid or melange

The difference is bigger than it sounds. Melange has texture and a relaxed look; the solid dark grey has calm and can do more at the smarter end. Under a dark blazer it looks like a deliberate choice, where the melange looks like time off, and for the monochrome look in grey shades the smooth surface is what makes the whole thing look grown up. If you have both in the wardrobe, you effectively have two different tops, even though the colour on the hanger looks the same.

The fabric

The T-shirt is made of 70 % bamboo viscose, 25 % organic cotton and 5 % elastane. The bamboo viscose makes the fabric smooth and cool against the skin, gives it the heavy, neat drape and carries sweat away, so it evaporates instead of sitting in the top. The cotton gives body and durability, and the elastane holds the shape, so the shoulders and the neckline sit correctly, even after many washes. Between black and light grey

Dark grey does most of the work of black with a softer edge. It hides signs of wear better than light grey, it is friendlier to the face than black, and it works in both directions: dark enough for winter layers, light enough for a summer evening. It is the colour you choose when you do not want to choose, and that is exactly why it gets worn the most.

Comfortable all day

The fabric regulates temperature both ways, cool in warm rooms and without a cold feeling on fresh mornings, and the moisture transport keeps the top fresh from morning to evening. The round ribbed neck keeps its grip, and the flat seams do not chafe, not even with a bag over the shoulder.

In layers without bulk

As the innermost layer under shirts and knitwear, the smooth, solid dark grey is the most discreet solution in the wardrobe: the fabric lies flat, the texture does not disturb through thin shirts, and the dark shade does not shadow through light layers the way black can. That makes it the most worn top of the winter, including on the days when nobody sees it.

Washing

Wash the top inside out at 30 to 40 degrees with your dark clothes, skip the fabric softener, and let it air dry. It keeps its colour, its shape and its smooth surface, and it rarely needs ironing. More advice is under washing and care.
